Dates for Your Diary

Dear Parents,

Last week, our Year 5 children had an amazing week at camp and this week, it is our Year 6 children's turn. The photos and stories coming back suggest the children are already in full swing undertaking adventures, taking risks to step out of their comfort zone with activities, food and sleeping arrangements. If last week is anything to go by, our children will be loving it. Our Senior Leadership Team have been joining the camp over the two weeks and I will have the pleasure of joining the children on Thursday and Friday. I can't wait to hear their stories! Camp provides children with an opportunity to develop their social skills, undertake personal challenges, learn independence, develop teamwork and collaborative skills, develop fitness and physical skills, and to develop all of the values of the PYP Learner profile in a meaningful and authentic context. Our children will also have the opportunity to extend and grow their AAROW's of Success at camp.

As we come to the end of the term, we have nearly completed the recruitment for 2019/20 school year. The recruitment is in place for some of our team who will be moving on at the end of the 2018/19 year. Erica Siu will leave our Chinese Department at the end of the year to explore other opportunities and spend more time with her young family. Annette Leone will also leave us to return to Australia to spend time with her family. We will obviously acknowledge all leaving staff at the end of the academic year next June.

A quick but important safety reminder. The children's toilets are for children only. We have separate toilets for adults. If you are in the school grounds and need to use a toilet, please seek out the adult facilities.

As we head into our last week of Term 1, please be reminded that we love to hear from you. If you have any feedback that you think would benefit the school, please do let me know @ neill.oreilly@kjs.edu.hk.

Kind regards

亲切的问候,

सधन्यवाद

Principal

Library News - International Bookmark Exchange, Book Donations, and Christmas Book Tree Contest

Year 2 - International Bookmark Exchange

As part of the Library's focus to help students achieve AAROWs of Success, for the past month, Year 2 students were given the Opportunity to brainstorm, plan and design bookmarks to trade with Year 2 students in different countries. Students were matched up with countries such as USA (2H), Australia (2S), Hungary (2L), and Portugal (2G & 2B). Students learned about the respective schools and about the country in which they reside. During the brainstorming stage, students decided that one side of the bookmark would have the theme, library, and the other side, Hong Kong.

We are excited that the bookmarks have been completed this week and we expect to receive bookmarks from students in their respective countries soon. Students have learned to be internationally-minded and learned to Respect cultural differences in other host countries. Here are some pictures of the students working on the bookmarks.

Book Donations to Philippine Schools Affected by Typhoon Manghut

December is the month to give. Please consider giving your books to Philippine Schools affected by Typhoon Manghut. NURTURE, an organization that collects and ships books to Philippine Schools, will be coming to Kowloon Junior School on 13 December 2018.  Should you have books in good condition that you would like to pass to us, please drop it off with our library team and we will pass it to them.

To find out more about NURTURE, please visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/NICE.NURTURE/.

Christmas Book Tree Contest

Due to popular demand from KJS students, the library is continuing its tradition to hold the Christmas Book Tree Contest. Guess the number of books used to make the Christmas book tree and enter for a chance to win a gift certificate used towards the next Scholastic book order. Deadline is 14 December 2018. Winner will be announced in Term 2. Hint: centre of the book tree is not hollow.

Learner Profile Design Challenge!

If you are interested in having a go at creating something that could be used across the KJS community, here is the challenge for you!

We would like to invite students to design ten KJS buttons that represent each of the attributes of the Learner Profile:

Caring, Principled, Courageous, Open-Minded, Thinkers, Knowledgeable, Reflective, Inquirers, Communicators, Balanced.

On each circular button we would like you to think about which image BEST represents that attribute (i.e. Which image best represents what it means to be caring?).

It should be simple, with not too much detail but with a clear message. It can be done on computer or carefully hand drawn ensuring that the drawing has colour and is clear. No words needed, just an image.

Once we receive all of the submissions and have made the selections we will do the formatting, adding titles and putting them into the circles/buttons. The only thing we need from you are the images you'd like to see represented.

Here are a couple of examples:

UNICEF Kid Power Programme - REMINDER

Sign-up for the first ever Kid Power Programme 2 in the Asia Pacific Region is still open. This programme encourages students to get active (vital for our wellbeing) and support UNICEF at the same time. This is an exciting initiative that all children can be a part of. For a fee of HKD100, our students are invited to enroll in a physical activity programme taking place from March 1st to May 31st, 2019. Participants are provided with a step tracker which measures their steps and movement for the period, earning Kid Powerpoints used to purchase essential food packets for children suffering malnutrition in famine-affected areas of the world.

Please note - this is organized by UNICEF; participation in this initiative is completely voluntary.

Sign up details and specifics about the programme can be viewed here.

Parent Representatives, we look forward to seeing you at our next PTA meeting which will be on Tuesday, 15 January at 5:00pm in the School Library.

Student Success

We are delighted families are regularly sharing their children's success at home with us at KJS. To help manage the large amount of information the school sends home, we will channel the celebration of success to our Facebook page leaving the newsletter with the key weekly messages and important dates. You can find the school's Facebook here. Please keep the photos and stories coming of our children shooting the AAROW's of Success!
