Dear Parents,

We have more than survived our first full week of 900 children in school and we even had some severe weather to test our arrival processes! Some important messages for you regarding the week ahead.

KJS International Baccalaureate Evaluation (and impact on afternoon zooms for four days)

Next week is a very important milestone for KJS. From Monday to Wednesday, we have two evaluators from the International Baccalaureate virtually at KJS to undertake a review since our last evaluation 5 years ago. The school has moved forward tremendously in that time and over the last 15 months, staff have been involved in a self review process to investigate and provide evidence of our progress against the IB Standards. During the week, teachers, EA’s, Parents, School Council and students, will meet with the evaluators to share their understanding of how the school learning environment and culture reflects the Primary Years Programme. The week is a culmination not only of 15 months work but also, all the work undertaken since the last evaluation in 2014.

The IB have just this week confirmed the timetable required for an effective evaluation. To facilitate the required meetings with staff and to give time for the staff to meet the team and prepare for the evaluation this Friday through to next Wednesday, our afternoon learning will be independent activities which complement the ‘in school’ learning of the day. Teachers and EA’s will not be zooming with children for these four days. Rather, they will set learning experiences and then follow up with children the following morning. This process will ensure learning continues for children and will also ensure staff can be fully involved in this very important evaluation process. This will also allow children some flexibility with learning activities in the afternoons on these days. On Thursday 15 October, we will revert back to afternoon Zooms.

Arrival times at school

If you have been dropping your child at school, you will be aware that after 8:00am things get very busy at the school gate. To ease congestion, we ask parents who are dropping their children to do so between 7:40am and 7:55am. Your support will help immensely!

Parent Seminar – Triple P

On Tuesday 13 October at 5 p.m. we will be holding our first Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) seminar by Zoom. This is an Australian and internationally acclaimed program and will be facilitated by our two trained leaders: Mrs Aukafolau and Mrs Parker.  At KJS we value the partnership that we have with parents and how we can develop this not only to support the wellbeing of students but also you, our parent community.

Our first in a series of three seminars is ‘The Power of Positive Parenting.’

Triple P is a program that aims to promote positive caring relationships between parents and their children and helps parents to develop effective management strategies for dealing with a variety of common developmental issues and also typical childhood behavioural concerns.  It will give you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge skills and confidence to support your child in a variety of ways and you will learn how to use positive parenting strategies to encourage children to to learn the skills and competencies they need to promote their health, development and wellbeing.  This aligns with the wellbeing aspect of our AAROWs of success and many of the IB learner profiles which are our school values.

In our first session you will be introduced to the five core principles of positive parenting:

– Having a safe, interesting environment for children

– Having a positive learning environment

– Using assertive discipline

– Having realistic expectations

– Taking care of yourself as a parent

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 13 October, please sign up via this form here.  Following the session those in attendance will be provided with a supporting leaflet in order that you can revisit the key ideas and themes.  Unfortunately,  due to copyright of the materials we are unable to record the session.
