Dear Parents,

There is so much going on at KJS to ensure ‘Success for Every Child’. On Monday afternoon, teachers met to share the impact of their Learning Sprints. It was such a wonderful rich dialogue regarding children’s learning and a sharing of expertise. This was followed by a meeting, with a focus session with our E-Learning Team. This group (representatives from all year levels and Chinese Department) are working extremely hard to ensure we are maximising the use of our new technology in the school, keeping our children safe online, and obtaining expert advice for our future plans. We are currently investigating IMPERO as a management tool to support safety and functionality with our technology.

Following this meeting, we had a School Council meeting where reports were presented regarding the enhanced PYP, the admissions process, a CIS update, school property, finance and personnel reports, and a report regarding the ongoing investigation of the possibility of a KJS Kindergarten to support the Success for all students at KJS now and in the future.

Tuesday, we saw the PTA meet and plan for the upcoming “Green Dream KJS PTA Fair”. It was great to see a good turnout. However, we can always do with more. The PTA meeting gives an opportunity for you to have a say in the school, to support Success for Every Child and to gain deeper insights into how the school works. Please consider joining up and coming to our next meeting on March 5th at 4:30 pm in the school library.

Kind regards

亲切的问候,

सधन्यवाद

Neill O’Reilly

Principal

Library News – KJS Book Week Details (25 Feb – 1 Mar)

KJS Book Week is almost here! This year’s Book Week was collaboratively planned with the Year 6 and will be held from 25 February to 1 March 2019. Your child has been told of some of the exciting activities that will be occurring during the week.

Mother Tongue Readers (Daily – Snacktime Play)

A favourite during Book Week is Mother Tongue Readings by Parents, Teachers and Staff. Students may come up to the library during snacktime play to listen to stories in different mother tongue languages such as:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • Russian
  • Hindi
  • Gujarati
  • Cantonese
  • Mandarin
  • Tagalog
  • Indonesian
  • Japanese
  • Korean

Students are welcome to join even if they are not familiar with the language. Teachers will remind students daily of the different languages that will be available for them to listen to and we will post this by the doors of their respective shared areas.

Mystery Readers (Daily – Lunchtime Play)

Twice a week, students are able to come to the library for lunchtime play with their year groups. The days they are allowed to go to the library, Mystery Readers will be there to read to the students.

Book Writing Contest Entries on Display in the Library

Everyone is a winner! All students who entered into the book writing contest will have their work prominently displayed in the Library during Book Week. During their library lessons, students will have the opportunity to view and read other students’ work. We will read all the entries and announce the results later.

Book Fair on 4/F Shared Area – February 27 & 28th (8:15 am to 3:30 pm)

Fun to Read has been invited to return to KJS for the annual Book Fair. Teachers have booked a 20-minute time slot either on Wednesday or Thursday for your child to purchase books. This will give children an opportunity to purchase books at a discounted price. Please note that it’s not mandatory for children to purchase books.  However, should children want to purchase books, we recommend students to bring no more than $300 in an envelope or ziplock bag with their name and class.

Parents are also invited to come and look at the books in the morning or after school.

Book Parade on Lower Playground – Friday, March 1st (8:45 – 9:30 am)

We’re ending off the week with students’ favourite Book Parade. Weather permitting, this year’s book parade will be held in the lower playground. Years 1 to 6 will be taking turns walking down a runway, with designated areas for parents to take pictures. As space is limited, we kindly ask that a maximum of 2 per family can attend the parade.

This year’s theme is “Find Your Treasure”. Children are asked to dress in their favourite book character of a book that they treasure and hold their book while walking across the stage.

Should it rain, we will hold the book parade in the Hall with Years 1 to 3 (8:45-9:15 am) and Years 4 to 6 (9:30-10:00).

After School Book Writing Club – starting Wednesday 27 February – FULL

Thank you to everyone who took interest in our after school book writing club that we introduced last week. Unfortunately, the class is now full.

The class was established due to the popularity of the book writing contest. For those who signed up, the course will begin on Wednesday 27 February, held from 3:00-4:15 at the library. After 12 weeks, students will have their books edited and published.

Please note that classes are not taught by KJS Teachers and Kowloon Junior School, English Schools Foundation and its affiliates shall take no responsibility for any activities, events, and services, that are organised by other organisations. This course will be taught by a teacher from Elephant Community Press (ECP). Should you have further questions about the course, please contact ECP directly.

PTA Update

School Fair, Saturday 16 March 2019 from 11am to 4:30pm

Our ‘Green Dream’ is less than a month away.  Get involved and help at the fair. We still need help with.

International food stalls – we need leaders and volunteers – to help liaise with the other members of the stall to help put the stall together and to help at the stall on the day of the fair.

Volunteers at Book Sales and the White Elephant Stall – where new and second-hand items, which are in good condition, are sold.

Any Items that you would like to donate for our Live Auction which will take place before the big raffle.

Raffle stubs’ counting – we need help prior to the fair with raffle stub counting.

If you can help, please contact us at pta@kjs.edu.hk, and let us know what time slots and in which areas you prefer to help and we will assign you to those time slots accordingly.  A Google Sign Up Form will be emailed to all parents this week as well so you can use either channel – the form or the email address – to book your time slot.  An hour of your time would make a huge difference.
