We are well and truly into the year and into learning. I have had a wonderful time visiting classes and seeing the learning in action! So that we can focus on learning rather than compliance we would appreciate your help with four things:
- School Bag: Please ensure your child has a backpack for school, not a wheelie bag. Bags with wheels are not safe for our stairs and cause trip hazards for others;
- Shoes: Black shoes with school uniform or white shoes with sports uniform. Please do not send your child with shoes that are a bit black and a bit white. If necessary you will need to purchase the correct uniform shoes by the end of this week;
- Jewellery: Many children coming with necklaces, wrist bands and other adornments. The only jewellery permitted is a non wifi watch, and religious adornments that are to be worn inside the uniform. Please contact us if you have any questions about this particular guideline;
- New hats: Our new hats have a cord that goes around the neck which has been identified as a potential risk to our children. We will be cutting the cord on Thursday (or you can cut it at home) and we will recycle the cords at school.
Thank you in advance for your support.
The most important meeting coming up for staff is the “You tell us” meeting on Monday, 2 September. This 10 minute meeting is an opportunity for you to tell us all about your child, their interests, passions, hobbies, talents and needs. These sessions are invaluable to staff as we develop relationships to enable us to support and stretch your child to ensure their success at KJS. The bookings will open this Thursday at 5:00pm via gateway so make sure you reserve a slot to meet with your child’s teacher. We will be sending home some question prompts for you in next week’s newsletter.
Finally, we are pleased to confirm ESF has been carefully monitoring the situation in Hong Kong and updating schools on a daily basis. As far as KJS is concerned, we have been satisfied with the safety and wellbeing of our children and have had no need to take any extraordinary action. We will continue to monitor the situation closely with the support of ESF and will keep you informed if there are any developments that impact the safety of our students. Thank you for taking the time to update your contact details via gateway and for your ongoing support of KJS.
A message from our New Expressive Arts Leader Ms. Vindy Ho
Welcome to the Expressive Arts Department at KJS 2019! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Expressive Arts Leader. I previously worked at Island Christian Academy and more recently at Australian International School as a music specialist teacher for primary and secondary. I am very excited to be given the opportunity to work at Kowloon Junior School. It is my vision to continue with the wonderful work that Mr. Stephen Davenport has done in the last five years, with the vision to further foster students’ love of learning and involvement in music this year.
I would also like to introduce music teacher Mr. Daniel Kam, who will be working with me this year and replacing Mrs. Anna Chen who will be going on maternity leave at the end of September. We congratulate Mrs. Chen and wish her a smooth delivery!
I am pleased to announce that we will be continuing with the majority of music clubs on offer from last year. Information regarding the music clubs and 1-1 instrumental lessons offer this year at KJS is provided in this link. We have made some slight enrollment adjustments regarding student sign-up, music club requirements and expectations as well as course fee payments. Term 1 activities will be open for registration at 1pm on Friday 23 August.
Mr. Kam and I look forward to working with your children to support “Success for Every Child” and also meeting the parent community throughout the school year. Please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com for any questions you may have.
Ms. Vindy Ho
KJS Expressive Arts Leader
Extra-Curricular Activities (After School or Lunch Time)
This term’s activities run by our teachers and registered tutors will open for registration at 1pm on Friday 23 August 2019. Details have already posted on Gateway.
For PE and Music Clubs, please also refer to the newsletters below.
Parents are asked to contact the school office before the start of school if a child is absent. If the school office does not get notification from you, the School Nurse will call your family home.
This year, to streamline communication with parents, a new function on Gateway to report absence is introduced (see below). You are strongly encouraged to try this new function.
Library News – Library Borrowing Cards, Unusual Reading Spot Contest and Library Monitors
Welcome back to school everyone! Our library team aims to keep the school community updated through KJS weekly newsletter and on our Orbit webpage. You can access Orbit by clicking on the pink icon on the KJS website. Please select Kowloon Junior School and press OK the first time you log on.
Library Borrowing Cards
Last year, students were given the Opportunity and Agency to design a KJS library book bag. In the conceptual phase, students designed and voted for an inside pocket that would allow for the placement of the library borrowing card. KJS students wanted more responsibility and flexibility over the borrowing of their books.
As such, starting in Term 1, KJS students will be given their borrowing cards. Please note, cards should be placed in the space indicated below.
The larger pocket above the borrowing card can be used by students to decorate their bag and to distinguish their bags from others.
Please note that students can only borrow books from the library if they have the KJS library book bag. Mandarin folders cannot be used in lieu of the bag. Also, should the library borrowing cards be lost, a penalty of HKD $10 will be charged.
Unusual Reading Spot Contest – Entries by 30 August 2019
Kowloon Junior School Library is excited to host our first annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest!
This summer, share your love of reading by showing us the unusual and interesting places where you can read. It can be a place you visit this summer, someplace in Hong Kong, or just a weird place in your home: it’s up to you! We know you love to read EVERYWHERE!
Contest Rules and Details:
In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book and we should clearly be able to see the book cover. Remember, KJS students only! One entry per KJS student.
Deadline: Friday 30 August 2019
Contest Rules: Participating students must turn in a 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” photo print on photo paper of their contest entry. Sorry, entries cannot be emailed.
After the summer, submissions will be voted on by a panel of judges and the winning images will then need to provide a digital version of their image. Photos taken should be in the highest resolution your camera will allow so that we can enlarge it for display in the Library. Note: minimum resolution pixel dimensions are 1840 x 2300; optimum resolution pixel dimensions are 2400 x 3000 or higher.
Finally, please do not Photoshop or edit the photo in any manner. We would like the photo to be as authentic as possible.
