Author Visit – Suzanne Younan (Years 1, 2 and 3) – 10 February
KJS Library is delighted to welcome author, Ms. Suzanne Younan to visit us on 10 February, to talk about her picture book “The Green Dragon”.
The book is about Willy, the Green Dragon as he soars overs island and beaches of Hong Kong. This beautifully illustrated book with warm, loving characters, who are endangered by our modern choices, reaches out to children to think about their daily actions and how they can make changes to reduce the plastic in their lives.
To be sustainable, the library team will not be printing order forms. Please click on the link to order your books by 7 February to get your copies.
Unusual Reading Spot Contest
We need your help during CNY holidays. If you have a chance, could you please take a picture of yourself reading a book in unusual spots. Pictures can be taken in a weird place in your home, in Hong Kong or abroad: it’s up to you! We know you love to read EVERYWHERE!
In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book and we should clearly be able to see the book cover.
Deadline: 14 February 2020
Here are some pictures of last year’s winners:
Yeji Jun (3J)
Teho Kim (3J)
Kaylee Yeung (4D)
Looking forward to your entries!
Mother Tongue Book Donation and Readers Needed!
KJS Library would like to expand our mother tongue book collection and encourage more students to read in their home language. In order to do this, we need your help.
You can help us in one of two ways:
- This Chinese New Year break, when you’re on vacation in your home country, consider bringing back a book and donating it to our library.
- Please ask your child to borrow a book from our mother tongue collection and record a video for us. We will be putting a QR code on our books and link them to the videos.
Videos should include:
- Record with your pointer finger following the text. Reading example.
- Read the title and author of the book.
Please return the book with a slip of paper that lets us know who read the book. Example: Dorothy Perkins, mother of Izzy Hui 3A. We will put this on the inside cover of the book permanently.
Email to Ms. Lau at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject: mother tongue book recording. Note: we have tried asking parents and students reading it at school but there was too much background noise. Readings at home are more favourable.
For all book donations, we will recognize the student in the newsletter and on our KJS Facebook page.
Thank you, Brian Fong (2G), for donating a Chinese mother tongue book.
Thank you for your support and let’s get our children reading in their mother tongues!
We had a very successful Bingo Night on Friday, with families and teachers dancing to great tunes and games hosted by our teachers, Jessica Austin and Heather Bogador. A big thank you to the both of them for their spirit and enthusiasm throughout the night. The evening was full of positive energy and everyone had a good time.
The school hall was filled with parents and children dressed in Disney themed costumes and we had some best dressed lucky winners that evening.
Thank you to all the families and faculty who supported the event.
Our next event will take place in February – the much-awaited Bingo Night at Hogwarts
Tickets are on sale right now.
Tickets purchased in Term 1 are still valid. If, for any reason, you cannot make it to the event, please pop into the PTA Shop to receive a full refund.
PTA School Fair
With less than 2 months away, the School Fair is fast approaching us. We need your help. We cannot host this Fair without you. If you can spare an hour or two on the day of the Fair, please let us know via email at email@example.com.
The areas in which we need help are:
- Game and Activities
- International Food Village
We are also looking for donations in cash or in the form of toys and other products. Please refer to the attached flyer for more details.
There are still spots available for rent in our Mini-Market. If you would like to rent a booth to promote your business or sell items, please let us know.
The raffle tickets have been distributed to the children. Please refer to the letter enclosed with the raffle tickets and help us sell these tickets over the Chinese New Year break.
On behalf of our entire PTA Community, we would like to wish you and your families a very happy and prosperous Year of The Rat.
The celebration of student success will channel to our Facebook page. You can find the school’s Facebook here. Please keep the photos and stories coming of our children shooting the AAROW’s of Success!
