Dear KJS Families,

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! I have spoken with many very proud students over the last week who have shared their beautiful lanterns with me. The vivid colours and eye-catching designs also mirror the energetic and positive atmosphere that I continue to experience on a daily basis in our learning environments.

In addition to our sports offerings, we are now able to offer some after school music sessions. This gradual return to a rich extra/co-curricular programme is an encouraging development, and we will look to expand our offerings further as we move through the school year.

As someone who is passionate about learning, I am always aiming to enrich my understanding by looking to research in fields such as neuroscience and applied psychology. Many practical ideas sit within these disciplines which I am keen to explore and share with you and our learners. Today, I'd like to share a very simple evidence-based practice to help offset procrastination.

Procrastination is something that we probably all deal with from time to time, particularly when it comes to tasks that are less than interesting to us. As parents, it is sometimes tempting to get a little too involved in trying to support our children when we see them procrastinate. A simple and effective practice comes from a phenomenon called the Zeigarnik Effect. The Zeigarnik Effect occurs when we begin something but don't finish it. As it turns out, our brains generally don't like to leave things incomplete once we start them. Something as simple as opening up a blank document and writing the title is enough to stimulate this effect. Perhaps you might consider testing this yourself in the near future?

Kind regards,

Dr Jamie Schmitz

Acting Principal

Library News

Dear Parents,

It's been a pleasure seeing all the excitement in the library. Last week, our new Year 5 library leaders started their training with our library team. Year 5 library leaders are students who are committed to giving up their time and energy to help improve the KJS library. Thank you to all who applied. More Year 5 students will be asked to join the team shortly.

Reading Photos

We are also appreciative of all the parents who have sent in their child's reading photos! It's so lovely to see students reading their favourite books in some unusual positions and places. Take a look at the photos here (KJS Virtual Library). If you haven't sent them in, please send them to Ms. Lau at macy.lau@kjs.edu.hk. Upon receipt, Ms. Lau will email you back. Due to the number of photos, it may take a few days to get back.

Library Parent Workshop

To ensure that Parents understand and know how to access our library services, we will be holding an upcoming Library Parent Workshop.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, September 28th at 5pm and it's aim is to help Parents navigate their way  through the KJS Virtual Library and Library Splat page. At the session, you will learn more about the resources and tools available to support your children with reading or research from home.

Students are welcome to join the session together with Parents to learn more about where they can access online resources.

Please save the date on your calendars and register here. Reminder that you will need your child's Splat login and password information.

Happy Reading everyone! If you have any questions, please email our library team at library@kjs.edu.hk.
