Dear KJS Families,

As you are already aware and have heard directly from ESF CEO – Belinda Greer – we are working hard to negotiate a positive and constructive way forward that supports continuity of learning, student, staff and family wellbeing, and the upcoming Compulsory Universal Testing requirement in Hong Kong. This is a significant challenge without a doubt, however, we are confident that we can find a way that creates a reasonable sense of balance regarding the aforementioned priorities. We will, of course, keep you posted as details come to light.

Thank you very much for your Distance Learning survey feedback. Though we now have some competing and pressing priorities that have come from the HK Government’s recent announcement, we are still committed to learning from the feedback. We will analyse the data, looking for both year-level and school wide trends. Our initial impression is that we are clearly working from a strong foundation and that there are some small adjustments that will potentially improve the experience for our students.

As highlighted by the detailed information in this edition of our newsletter, we are aiming to move ahead with Book Month as planned. This wonderful celebration of language and stories is sure to energise and ‘lift the tide’ for all. I would like to acknowledge our wonderful Library Team – led by Ms. Macy Lau – as well as our brilliant staff and Student Council members who have contributed time, effort, and great ideas to this important event.

Kind regards,

Dr Jamie Schmitz

Acting Principal

Book Month

Dear Parents and Students,

Book Month is coming soon! It is from the 28th of February to the 31st of March. Our library team and the Student Council have organised a variety of book-themed activities that you will surely enjoy!

During this month, there will be a range of book-themed activities for all ages, organised by our Library Team such as World Book Day Live Events, Author Visits and a Book Dress-Up day. The World Book Day live events will be held separately on the 28th of February, 2nd of March, 3rd of March and the 14th of March.

We also have some authors coming to visit and share their books with us. Grace Lin’s will be held on the 3rd of March, Remy Lai’s will be on the 14th of March and Sarah Scheerger’s will be on the 22nd of March. There are also events on the KJS Virtual Library that will be held during Book Month, such as Live Storytelling, Home Language Readers, a Bookazine book fair, a Scholastic Live Event, Y1-3 book activities and Y4-6 book activities.

The most exciting day of Book Month is on the 11th of March, which is a Book Dress Up Day! On that day, please feel free to dress up as your favourite character from a book! Lastly, we will have a virtual book week assembly on March 18th.

Apart from the events by our Library Team, the KJS Student Council have also organised a variety of fantastic book-themed events for Book Month! One example is an ‘80 days Around the World’ themed play where Student Councilors share stories, cultures and their heritage from countries around the globe. Another exciting event is a Book Month song, where teachers dance with their favourite book to the book-themed parody of the song ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ by Rick Astley. There are also other activities such as bookmark making, a toilet roll character competition, character art and making something about your country!

We also have organised a Mother Tongue Book Drive from the 28th of February to the 31st of March. To donate books from your mother tongue, you can either drop them off at our KJS Security office (located at our main school entrance) or keep the books at home and bring them in when we return to school.

All donations will go directly to the KJS School Library for our students to enjoy!

We hope you will enjoy these upcoming events for Book Month. If you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to email studentcouncil@kjs.edu.hk or macy.lau@kjs.edu.hk.

Thanks for your attention!

Kind regards,

The KJS Student Council
