Last Friday’s Year 4-6 Learning Celebration Assembly, led by Year 6, celebrated the passion, knowledge, skills and talents of our Year 6 students. The Year 6 students showcased the PYP Approaches to learning skills of research, thinking, self-management and communication. The five classes used a variety of methods to communicate and persuade others, you can see their presentations here.
Over the last week, we have had visitors from Victoria Shanghai Academy, Pakaranga Heights School (New Zealand) and participants at the IBO “Making the PYP Happen” Conference at KGV. They all had similair messages: “Such positive and engaged children”, “Energised and passionate teachers”, “A learning environment that supports learning and agency”.
These messages remind me of the positive progress we are making toward “Success for Every Child” and shooting the AAROW’s of Success at KJS. Our senior leadership team spent 45 minutes with every teacher and classroom educational assistants over the last week. The meetings reinforced our confidence that we are supporting and challenging our students to succeed. I am very thankful to the passionate team here at KJS and the support from you, our parent community.
We look forward to seeing our Year 3 parents at the Learning Celebration Assembly this Friday as another year group have the opportunity to showcase their learning at KJS.

Library News – Year 1 & 2 Author Visit, Philippines Book Donations, Unusual Reading Spot Contest Voting and Children Magazine Subscriptions
Year 1 & 2 Author Visit – Reena Bhojwani
At KJS we celebrate Success for Every Child through our AAROW’s of Success, Achievement, Agency, Respect, Opportunity and Wellbeing. On Monday 23 September, KJS Library was proud to host an author visit from KJS alumni and author, Ms. Reena Bhojwani.
Reena visited us and shared with Year 1 & 2 students about her book, Surprising Mrs. Rhubarbson, and answered students’ questions about being an author. The students were very excited and learnt the importance of “kindness”. Thank you Reena for visiting us at the library.
Order forms and bookmarks from Reena have been passed to classroom teachers. The due date is 3 October. If students have questions for Reena about being an author, please write her a letter with an envelope with the student’s name and class clearly written on top.
Philippines Book Donations
Last year, the KJS school community came together to organize a book drive to collect books to donate to rebuild libraries in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Mangkhut. Parents and students came with bagfuls of books. Teachers took action by sorting through their classrooms, shared areas and resource rooms. Together, we donated approximately 1,800 books, 800 textbooks and 300 teacher manuals to NURTURE, an Initiative for Children’s Education.
We will continue to collect books this year. From now until November 30th, please bring used books in good condition to us. A collection box will be set up outside the Primary School Office on the ground floor.
Our books were delivered three times last year (Christmas, Easter and summer) to Malungon Region on Mindanao Island, the Philippines, a couple of hours South of Davao. We’re happy to announce that we helped rebuild eight school libraries with your support.
NURTURE has shared video of why books are greatly needed in the Philippines and some pictures of how our books reached the students there.
Unusual Reading Spot Contest Voting Begins!
It’s the last week to vote! From now until October 4th, 2019, you can vote for your favourite picture! Please note that voting can only be done through student email accounts. External emails will not be able to access the voting forms.
Please click on the following link and we’ll announce the results after the school break.
Children Magazine Subscriptions
KJS Library offers a wide variety of print and electronic media to students and parents. We hoped you enjoyed your free copy of the magazine provided to you from Bayard Press Asia.
A copy of the magazine subscription from Readable Press will be passed to students this week.
Please note, subscriptions are optional for families and there is no obligation to subscribe.
Winter Uniform Payments
We are still waiting on payments for some winter uniform orders. Please make the payments immediately so the PTA office can place with orders with our uniform provider. Orders placed without payments cannot be processed. If payment is being made by cheque, please write your child’s name, class name and your contact number at the back of the cheque. If payment is made by cash, clear indication of the child’s name and class is required so payments can be matched to orders. We are nearing the deadline to submit these orders and late payment could affect the delivery of all uniforms.
Our Family Bingo Night will take place on Friday 15 November 2019. More details will be released soon.
Hope you have a wonderful week at KJS!
