Dear Parents,

The last week of the year is filled with mixed feelings for us at KJS. We farewell our Year 6 children, who have grown, learnt so much with us over the years, and have become close to our hearts. We also farewell families, who are ending their daily association with KJS, as they either move away or as their children move on to secondary schools. We also farewell staff, who are moving on for a variety of reasons.

This week we farewell teachers:

Annette Leone                        Mhairi Wallace                                    Erica Siu

Stephen Davenport                Guiovanna Alarcon                 Georgina Taylor

…and Educational Assistants:

Lizzie Sharp- Eliazar               RongRong Yao-Beckers        Morgan Lewis

Amrita Sunramanian               Wasal Khan

…and leaving us for just one year:

Drew Yip                                 Stacey Lord

We thank the staff for their dedication and service and wish them and the students who will be leaving KJS, all the very best for their next steps. We are pleased to advise that due to the high quality of applicants, we have been able to fully staff KJS with exceptional staff to join our team for the year ahead. We certainly are fortunate to have such a high calibre of staff to teach and care for your children.

If this is the last KJS newsletter for you as a family, we hope your association has been a positive one and thank you for your commitment to KJS over the years.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the whole team at KJS for their dedication, professionalism, hard work and positivity as they have worked to ensure “Success for Every Child” at KJS. I also want to thank you, our parents, for partnering with us. Together we can achieve great things! Keep your eye out in the next few days on our Facebook page to see the final updates and celebrations of the 2018/29 year.

We wish you all a safe and joyful summer of family time. Do enjoy the change in pace and the opportunity to create special family memories.

Kind regards

Neill O’Reilly

Unusual Reading Spot Contest

Kowloon Junior School Library is excited to host our first annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest!

This summer, share your love of reading by showing us the unusual and interesting places where you can read. It can be a place you visit this summer, someplace in Hong Kong, or just a weird place in your home: it’s up to you! We know you love to read EVERYWHERE!

Contest Rules and Details

In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book and we should clearly be able to see the book cover. Remember, KJS students only! One entry per KJS student.

Deadline: Friday 30 August 2019

Contest Rules:  Participating students must turn in a 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” photo print on photo paper of their contest entry. Sorry, entries cannot be emailed.

After the summer, submissions will be voted on by a panel of judges and the winning images will then need to provide a digital version of their image. Photos taken should be in the highest resolution your camera will allow so that we can enlarge it for display in the Library. Note: minimum resolution pixel dimensions are 1840 x 2300; optimum resolution pixel dimensions are 2400 x 3000 or higher.

Please do not use “camera phone” photos as resolutions are not high enough to be enlarged and printed for display.

Finally, please do not Photoshop or edit the photo in any manner. We would like the photo to be as authentic as possible.

Reminder to Children Leaving KJS

For children who will not be returning to KJS for the 2019/2020 school year, please be reminded to copy to a thumb drive all of your child’s school records from Gateway, as access to the system will not be available after departure

Residential Address Update on Gateway

If your family will be moving or changing residential address over the summer, please be reminded to update accordingly on Gateway, especially for next year’s Year 6 children, as transition to Year 7 will be processed according to current residential at the time of application.

KJS Parents With Siblings

Referring from an ESF press release dated 8 March 2019 (click here for the full article):

Students joining the first year of an ESF kindergarten from August 2020 will be guaranteed a place at an ESF primary and secondary school, if they can benefit from a mainstream education.

“Students will now be able to move seamlessly through the ESF education system from K1 to Year 13 without the need for further interviews.”

If you have a younger child who is born in 2017 and wishes to join the ESF family, he/she should be eligible to apply for an ESF kindergarten this September to start in the 2020/2021 school year. More detail will be posed on the ESF website over the summer.

PTA Update

The PTA had its final event of the year yesterday by celebrating and being thankful for all our helpers, or as we call them fondly, Aunties.

We had a great turnout at our Aunty Appreciation Afternoon. Our guest speaker, Ms. Liza Avelino spoke about plastic, reducing its use and how we can all help clean up plastic waste in Hong Kong. The PTA would like to thank Ms. Macy Lau, our librarian as well as Audrey Lee, Jayden Chan, Krishna Bhojwani, Azara Moolchandani and Priyana Sujanani from Year 6. Azara and Priyana gave a short talk about rights of domestic helpers in Hong Kong.

On this note allow me, on behalf of the entire PTA committee of 2018-19, to thank each and everyone of you for your support of the PTA this year. We look forward to future collaborations in 2019-20.

I wish you and your families a fantastic summer holiday.

Kind regards,

Saloni Melwani
