Dear Parents.

A warm welcome back after the mid-term break. I am pleased to tell you the teams are refreshed, revived and ready to go to ensure a successful remainder of term 1.

Our vision of “Success for Every Child” and achieving our AAROW's of Success is all about parents (and often Aunties), children and staff working together in partnership. The Three Way Learning Conferences, today and next week, are essential to support, challenge and nurture each child. Your child will have an opportunity to share their progress, and with support, discuss next steps so that you as parents are aware and thereby have meaningful and enabling conversations at home.

Please take the opportunity to notice the skills, knowledge, understandings and dispositions your child has achieved rather than noticing what they are not yet doing. Learning is a complex lifelong journey and we know children are more likely to succeed when they have supportive and informed parents and teaching staff to challenge them to be the best that they can be. Together, despite the challenges of 2020 we can ensure success for your child.

Please note the Student Council Community Chest Dress Casual Day notice below. It is for a great cause and the event is happening tomorrow.

Many thanks to Jane Parker and Carolyn Aukafolau for the ‘Triple P' Parenting Session last night with over a hundred parents in attendance. We know the role of parenting is especially important at the moment given the complex times we are in. The session was very timely and much appreciated.

I know some of you will be wondering when we can return to full days at school again. Please note ESF and KJS are actively engaged with the EDB and will act as soon as we have any advice of impending changes and will communicate with you any planned changes. We would be so happy to have the children for full days. However, it is important we follow the advice and guidance of the EDB and CHP.

We look forward to seeing you at the Three Way conferences over the next week!

Kind regards

亲切的问候,

सधन्यवाद

Neill O'Reilly

Principal

Community Chest Dress Casual Day

Dear Students and Parents.

We would like to inform you about our upcoming KJS dress casual day on Thursday 29 October.

The main idea is to raise funds for donating to The Community Chest of Hong Kong by putting on casual wear.

About Community Chest

The Community Chest organises fund-raising events to benefit the local community. Their main focus areas are: children, family, the elderly welfare, health and community services.

For more details about Community Chest, please check their website here.

Make a Donation

You can support Community Chest by donating HK$20!

Students who wish to donate, can hand over their donations to their class teachers.

Wear Casual

As Halloween is nearing, children have the option to dress up either in a Halloween costume or a casual wear.

Together, WE can be a part of this noble cause.

Thank you!

KJS Student Council Team

Library News

Welcome back to school everyone! I hope  you had a fantastic October break.

A reminder to visit our KJS Virtual Library regularly for updates and exciting opportunities for children. For example, there will be opportunities to order Scholastic Books online from 2-11 November.

Emails were sent to all Year 5 & 6 students yesterday to join Battle of the Books.

It is a club for all of you bookworms out there. Over the course of the year, you will read twenty books selected by Hong Kong librarians and teachers.

In the club, we will battle in teams of six. The battle consists of a series of questions about twenty books. It is a competition challenging you to remember what happened in the book and to pick up the references, themes, and ideas in the books that are hinted at in the questions.

Towards the end of the year, in May, there is a Hong Kong wide Battle of the Books competition in which schools across Hong Kong compete to see who will be the champion book readers.

If you read all twenty books and participate well in the Battle of the Book club at school, you might have the opportunity to be in the Hong Kong Battle of the Books competition.

Of course, it isn't all about the competition. You are a winner already if you choose this club because it is a chance to read twenty brilliant books by a wide range of authors in a wide range of genres. This will be a great club for you if you love reading and are interested in being introduced to some new authors.

This club requires a year-long commitment so do think carefully before you sign up. With half day school at the moment, meetings will be held once a week during breaktime.

Deadline for signup: 3pm on 4 November 2020

Note: As last year's competition was cancelled, the priority this year will be given to those who were on the team last year.
