Yr1 Curriculum Update – 04/05/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 17th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Sharing the Planet

This week, the students have continued their learning journeys, inquiring into the central idea, ‘People’s choices can help or hurt the Earth.’   Learning opportunities have provided students with deeper awareness of how their choices can positively or negatively impact the Earth, accepting responsibility with regards to the 6Rs. Within art sessions, for example, students have started to create abstract paintings using geometric and free-form shapes using recycled paper surfaces. Alternatively, students continue to create non-fiction posters within Language lessons to raise awareness of different environmental issues (e.g. water wastage, plastic pollution, etc), selecting the appropriate courses of action to solve the problems.

All Year 1 students are extremely excited in their preparations to showcase their upcoming learning journeys during the Celebration of Learning (please see below for further details).

Within Maths, students continue to solve addition and subtraction problems using different concrete materials and strategies. Part of this learning process involves supporting students understanding of how they can use these materials and explicitly teaching how to apply different strategies to solve problems.

Celebration of Learning

All parents are invited to the Year 1 Celebration of Learning taking place on Friday 25th May 2018 (1.45pm-2.30pm). Students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning journeys from the current unit ‘Sharing the Planet’ with you in their classrooms. The Celebration of Learning will end at 2.30pm.

Suggestions for supporting learning at home

Look for different recyclable materials (e.g. plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, etc) around the home. Encourage your child to engage in a recycle craft activity.
