Yr1 Curriculum Update -06/06/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

It's our 19th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child's learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let's Inquire – Sharing the Planet

Most of us have been on a walk around KJS and exploring how we are implementing the 6R's here at school. We have been surprised to find things like compost buckets in many year levels, solar panels on the rooftop, furniture and planter boxes made from old tires and wooden crates. We also found recycling bins in shared areas and our outdoor spaces.

We visited the Tseung Kwan O Landfill last week and learned about the process of waste management in Hong Kong.  We discovered that people do not like living near landfill because of the smell.  Hong Kong is having to build new landfill space as they are running out of space, as there are only 3. We also learnt that 500 trucks per day deliver rubbish to the landfill and it only closes during a typhoon 8 signal or above.

We will continue to think about ways we will take action in our school and at home. Students will explore persuasive writing and hopefully convince others to join us in our efforts to help our Earth.

If you receive any requests at home, please help them by continuing their intended actions and helping them feel like they are making a difference.

We have been exploring open ended questions with several different ways to find answers. This has challenged students to think outside the box, work with partners and be able to explain their thinking with mathematical language. Students used scales and manipulative materials to use transfer their learning from concrete to abstract work.

Chinese Year 1:

Year 1 children are inquiring into Chinese learning through songs, stories and rhymes. Different learning opportunities are provided for children to explore their interests and promote agentic learning.

Here's a glimpse of the happenings in some of our classrooms:

If you have not purchased one yet, please be reminded KJS book bag will be required after Easter for children to borrow books from the library.
