Yr1 Curriculum Update - 09/02/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It's our 12th edition!

Every 2 weeks we will write a newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child's learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Principal's Message

Dear parents,

What an unusual situation we find ourselves in!

Below you will find learning options for your child for the next week. We are aware that there will be a wide range of home situations for our students, some will have access to technology, play equipment, the kitchen and adult help and others will not have this access or support. We are also aware some families have taken advantage of the closure to extend their Chinese New Year holiday. Considering these variables, we have created a range of learning experiences your child can choose from which provide opportunity for reading, writing, maths hands on challenges, continuation of units of inquiry together with physical activity. Please support your child to take up the challenges and continue with their learning during this closure.

Please also reassure your child we will be continuing with book week activities (28th Feb and 1st March) and our Chinese New Year celebrations (2nd March). As previously advise you can contact myself or your child's teacher by email if you have specific questions. We do hope you and your children stay well and that you can make the most of this break from formal schooling.

Kind regards

Neill O'Reilly

Let's Inquire - Where we are in Place and Time…

To continue our exploration into homes, students have inquired into how the structures and features of different homes are connected to their environments (e.g. igloos in Alaska, stilt houses for fishing houses, etc).   18Provocations such as books, pictures, videos and artifacts have provided students with the research opportunities to collect data using their 5 senses to observe materials and artifacts carefully.  Consequently, students have started to create their own non-fiction pages presenting information in different ways.

Shape has been a continued focus of our inquiries with students encouraged to sort and describe shapes according to their names, properties and features. Year 1 students have experimented with tessellations, making 2D & 3d shapes using straws and lollipop sticks.
