Yr1 Curriculum Update – 09/03/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 14th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Where we are in Place and Time…

This week, the students have been finishing their most recent inquiry “Homes look different for a variety of reasons”. The students planned, designed and then constructed their homes using materials, methods and techniques they explored throughout the inquiry.  Students concluded their work reflecting on the type of home they built, how it connected to the environment and evaluated its success.

The students have also been inquiring into number, learning how to solve open ended problems in different ways.  We have been focusing on mathematical language such as add, subtract, more, less, equal, same and amount.  Have a go and see if you can solve one of our problems!  If you unsure of how, ask your child for some help!  This week we have started to record our thinking in pictures and adding symbols such as +, – and =.

We have also been looking at different aspects of AAROW, where our primary focus has been on respect. The children reflected on the following question:

How has learning promoted respect for self, others or the environment?

Pupils thought of different ways that they could show respect towards themselves, their friends and the classroom, identifying the resources we are fortunate enough to have in our school.

Wednesday 14th March

Pi Day.  As part of the school’s Math’s Week, children are invited to dress up in a jazzy maths style.  Costumes may include numbers, shapes, patterns, or anything else connected to maths.

Thursday 15th & Friday 16th March

Student Led Conferences.  Please ensure you have made an appointment on Gateway.  The conferences will commence after school on Thursday and all day on Friday.  Students will only need to come to school on Friday if they are attending a conference with their parents.

During the conference the children will show you around their classroom and various activities will be set up for them to demonstrate their learning.  During the conference we encourage parents to ask questions and listen carefully.  Teachers will be in the classrooms but the children will be your guide!  Parents can ask the children some of the following questions. We will also have supports and prompts available in the classroom to help you and your child to get the most out of this important learning experience.

What were you learning about?

What did you do?

What did you use to help you learn?

What ways did you share/show your learning?

What skills did you use? (Thinking skills/observation skills/communication skills/collaboration skills)

What could you do next?

How would you change or improve your work?

What went well and what do you find hard?

What have you had to persevere at in your learning?

What did you enjoy learning in this unit?

What are you most proud of in your learning?
