Yr1 Curriculum Update - 11/01/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Year 1 Working together to achieve success for every child

Curriculum Update 7th December 2018

Greetings! – It's our 9th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child's learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let's Inquire – How We Express Ourselves

We have started inquiring into how ‘imagination can be expressed in different ways'. We have had a very exciting beginning, starting with a visit to the theatre to watch one of our favourite stories “We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen. The students had an incredible experience and were able to watch the story being interpreted in an innovative way using paint, music, dance, drama and even water pistols!

Back to school and we gave the students the opportunity to explore different ways to express the story through teacher led workshops. These included; acting, dance, drawing, yoga and using the app Toontastic. They were very passionate about this experience and shared what they would like to explore further during reflection time.

We will continue to explore mapping the story, using it to inspire our art work and using our imagination to innovate the story.

‘Success for Every Child – AAROW

Achievement: What are we achieving? The students have achieved new understanding of the meaning of expression. They now know that expression means to show something and they have successfully explored expressing a story in a variety of ways. They have learned new communication skills through drama and dance and new art skills such as splodging and collage!

Agency: What agentic opportunities have we had? The students have been able to choose how to innovate a story using their own creative ideas and will be given the choice to further explore a creative expression that they are interested in. Furthermore, we are currently developing our shared learning space and have collected students ideas to support this.

Respect: How are we developing a respectful community? We have revisited our expected and unexpected behaviours to tune in to what makes a respectful community that cooperates successfully. We have also discussed how we show respect to our environment and resources in connection to developing the shared learning space.

Opportunity: What opportunities have we had? Our new math unit is focussed on place value and the students have had the opportunity to play with a variety of resources prior to them using them to support this conceptual understanding. We have been finding out how to make numbers using 4 digits e.g. how many numbers can you make using 2, 7, 6, 1. We have been learning how to explain our thinking and communicate our ideas.

Well being: How are we developing a positive sense of well being? We have enjoyed finding out what are our students ideas and suggestions for the shared area and appreciating that their voice is the strongest in relation to developing this shared learning space. This opportunity for agency will support a positive sense of well being.

Mandarin

Chinese Year 1:

Year 1 children focused on the concept of wellbeing by inquiring into the celebration of Christmas at the end of the year and then into the culture and celebration of Chinese New Year in 2019. Connections to learning are made using Chinese songs, rhymes, games and stories.

Here's a glimpse of the happenings in our classrooms:
