Yr1 Curriculum Update – 12/01/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 10th edition!

Every 2 weeks we will write a newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Where we are in Place and Time…

This week, the students have started the new inquiry “Homes look different for a variety of reasons”. The students began by working together to sort a variety of pictures into ‘Homes’ and ‘Not homes’. This task initiated questions that will lead our inquiry, such as, ‘Why do we need homes?’ and ‘Why do homes look different?’.

We have introduced ‘Mind Maps’ to help the children organise and record their ideas. We have used this for idea stems, such as, ‘Homes look different’ and ‘Features of a Home’. This has supported their independent writing and helped with discussions. We will continue to use this tool when introducing non-fiction texts, the genre we will be focusing on throughout this inquiry.

As further provocations our students have had the opportunity to research using books and photographs, plan and design homes by drawing and construct homes using a variety of materials. As part of our exploration into non-fiction texts we have introduced labelling and they have been encouraged to label the designs they created.

To further consolidate the skill of sorting and to introduce shape, the children were asked to sort a variety of 2D shapes and give their reasons for sorting (criteria). Shape will continue to be a focus throughout this inquiry where we will be developing and consolidating their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes through the application of practical and exploratory play.
