Yr1 Curriculum Update - 15/02/19Working together to achieve success for every childYear 1 Working together to achieve success for every child
Kung Hei Fat Choy! It's our 11th edition! We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child's learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences. Let's Inquire – How We Express Ourselves We have been inquiring into how ‘imagination can be expressed in different ways'. Children have been exploring storytelling following the Talk for Writing approach, imitate, innovate, create. Learners have been thinking about the story of the Three Little Pigs, retelling and innovating upon the traditional tale we all know so well. Inspired by storybooks such as The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by John Scieszka children have been changing the story by altering the characters, setting or events and moving the narrative on in different ways. Students have been investigating creative expression, making puppets, masks, using props, our Big Blue Blocks and story stones to tell their stories. Classes have also enjoyed cooperating across the year group in our dance sessions, using their bodies, moving to music and retelling the story of The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle. We have also been thinking about our favourite books, movies, comics and cartoons, discussing favourite characters, answering friend's questions and discussing our own thoughts and feelings. When reading, children have been taking things slowly, looking at the front cover, making connections and predictions about the book, its characters and developing our reading comprehension. Mathematics An understanding of place value when working with numbers is vitally important. Without it, learners will never have a true understanding of what numbers actually mean. As shown below the number 2,473 can be broken up into two thousands, four hundreds, seven tens and three ones. i.e. 2,473 = 2,000 + 400 + 70 + 3. Working primarily with two digit numbers, our students have been Inquiring into place value, beginning to explore the value of each digit. They have been exploring value using manipulatives such as Base 10 blocks, multilink cubes, Numicon and Duplo. Grouping large numbers of objects into tens, linking the value of a number to its digits, making connections and developing their number sense. Mandarin Chinese Year 1: Year 1 children continued to inquire into the topic of Chinese New Year, its customs and celebrations. Connections to learning are made using Chinese stories, songs, rhymes and games. Here's a glimpse of the happenings in our classrooms: We will be sending out Evidencer updates throughout this unit of inquiry and our latest update is today!
