Yr1 Curriculum Update -24/05/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

It’s our 18th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Sharing the Planet

We have continued to be very enthusiastic little inquirers and are showing much interest and concern for ways we can help the planet.  Lots of children are taking their new knowledge home and are taking action by turning off the tap while brushing their teeth to save water, switching off the lights when not needed as well as recycling plastic, metal, paper and glass.

1T has created a recycling centre in the shared area for all of year 1 to explore.  We also have a new research area and 2 new woodworking benches which have been very useful in creating signs for the recycling centre.  We also had some ‘little’ visitors (upcoming year 1 students for 2020) in our shared area over the last few weeks. Our children were very helpful in modeling expected behaviours and answering any questions that they had.

We have also been very creative,  writing our own songs about the 6R’s to perform at assembly and for our upcoming Celebration of Learning.  We are starting to learn about the importance of ‘writing to explain’ and have used this new skill in our non-fiction books we have been creating in class.

Mathematics

We are learning how to have a positive mathematical mindset and to be committed when learning something new or challenging.  This week we have been exploring a different way to make 2 equal numbers by adding or subtracting numbers whilst using manipulatives to support our learning. With a partner, we have learnt how to think differently, and we can use prior knowledge to help build on our new understandings.

Mandarin

Chinese Year 1:

Year 1 children are inquiring into Chinese learning through songs, stories and rhymes. Different learning opportunities are provided for children to explore their interests and promote agentic learning.

Here’s a glimpse of the happenings in some of our classrooms:

If you have not purchased one yet, please be reminded KJS book bag will be required after Easter for children to borrow books from the library.
