Yr1 Curriculum Update – 26/01/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 11th edition!

Every 2 weeks we will write a newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Where we are in Place and Time…

To continue our exploration into homes we went around the world and experienced 5 different environments, including, urban, arctic, jungle, desert and waterside environments.

We started with the child initiated question, ‘Why do homes look different?’  and then went on to investigate and research in a variety of ways. We had provocations such as, books and pictures, videos and artifacts. To collect data we used our 5 senses to observe materials and artifacts carefully.

To reflect on this each class used the scaffold is, can, needs and are to help them define each environment e.g. An igloo is a home in the arctic. It can be big or small. It needs walls, a roof and a door. Igloos are made of snow.

To further consolidate their understanding of homes and why they look different, the children applied their sorting skills when grouping homes in different environments, they then discussed the similarities and differences. They have shown a keen interest in materials and structures which we will continue to explore next week.

We have continued to find out about information books and the children are gaining an understanding of what a non-fiction text must have and can have and are generating questions for what they want to find out.

Shape has been a continued focus and we are delving deeper into language development. To support this, we have been reading ‘The Important Book’, which helps the students to think carefully about what a shape is, its name, properties and features. They have also explored shapes freely, experimenting with tessellation, and making 2D and 3D shapes using lollipop sticks and straws.
