Yr1 Curriculum Update – 26/10/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 5th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Who We Are

We have been thinking of ourselves as learners and have reflected on how much we have developed and what we can do now. Using stories such as, “Ish” and “The Dot” by Peter. H. Reynolds and resources on Class Dojo about Growth Mindset we have thought about what we cannot do yet. The students have been making connections between mistakes and learning and how you cannot do one without the other.

We have also been tuning students into the next Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves. Our focus will be on communities, systems and how they support each other. We have applied the skills learnt in the current unit, such as cooperation and the students have been working together to record their current understanding.  There has also been lots of partner, group and whole class discussions about photographic provocations which has allowed them to demonstrate how they can actively listen to another.

‘Success for Every Child – AAROW

Achievement: What are we achieving? In literacy the students have been exploring books connected to experiences and are then recounting their own experiences using pictures, words and sounds. They are now beginning to reflect on what their next steps in learning are. In number we have been continuing to look at number representation, ordering and sequencing and have created our own number lines out of different materials found in our classrooms.

Agency: What agentic opportunities have we had? As part of one provocation, organisational systems in the classroom were taken away (such as the boxes for lunch). The students cooperated to independently construct replica systems!

Respect: How are we developing a respectful community? After the half term break we feel it is important to consolidate the respectful behaviour that we have developed before our holiday. We have been mindful of our actions and words when working with others in our classroom environment.

Opportunity: What opportunities have we had? The students are now familiar with expectations in the shared area and we are now gathering voice on what opportunities that would like when learning in that space. There are many ideas, such as, gears, beebots and box construction!

Well being: How are we developing a positive sense of well being? As we are continuing with our whole school wellbeing focus we plan to collaborate to make bunting for whole school display and we may be contributing the the secret garden (Shhhhhhhhhhh!).
