Yr1 Curriculum Update – 29/03/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Year 1 Working together to achieve success for every child

It’s our 14th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Sharing the Planet

We are at the beginning and tuning in stages of Sharing the Planet. Throughout this unit we will be inquiring into;  ‘People’s choices can help or hurt the Earth’.

We have started to collect our classroom waste and as a year group on Friday we will put all of our waste together for sorting. One of our skills this inquiry is to collect data, evaluate it and present our findings in different ways. I wonder what our ideas will be after our big rubbish sort? I wonder how our finding will affect the choices we make?

During this inquiry we will be using the visual thinking tool, ‘I see’, ‘I think’, ‘I wonder’, find out more about this here. We have been using this tool when exploring photo and small world provocations of global issues.

A new concept that we are finding out about is cause, effect and action. We have explored this in a number of ways and are beginning to understand how they are connected. We will continue to explore this when finding out about problems that are affecting our planet.

We are beginning to understand the features of a non – fiction (information) text and are exploring how it can be used. Do you know the features? What is your favourite non – fiction book? What is the most interesting fact that you know?

Mathematics

We are continuing to explore the concept of adding two groups together. We are consolidating our understanding through number stories such as; ‘I have two apples, I buy 6 more. How many apples do I have altogether?’. As a year group we are focussing on developing students understanding of mathematical language and showing our thinking in different ways. Students are expected to explain their thinking and show it using different manipulatives.  We are also beginning to use different strategies to solve problems such as using number lines.

Mandarin

Year 1 children continue to inquire into Chinese learning through stories and rhymes and how Chinese characters are formed. Connections to learning are made through songs, rhymes and games.

Here’s a glimpse of the happenings in some of our classrooms:
