Yr2 Curriculum Update – 01/03/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to the 12th edition!

Sharing the Planet: “Plants sustain life on Earth and play a role in our lives”

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The children have been tuning into their new unit ‘Sharing the Planet’. Over the last 2 weeks, the children have been exploring the different garden areas (sky garden and secret garden) at school and thinking about observing what they see, what it makes them think about and what they wonder. An inside garden has also been created in the Year 2 shared area for the children to explore. They have now sorted their wonders to help them decide what they are going to inquire into first. Ask your child what their class is going to be finding out.

Continuing their learning connecting to wellbeing, Year 2 have been creating posters with their success criteria on to display in their different play areas. They have then had the opportunity to explore these areas, using the success criteria, ensuring successful play.

Literacy

This week the children have started to look at poetry and make connections between poetry and stories. This has lead them to see connections between word choice. The children have been thinking about nouns, adjectives and verbs to describe plants and the way they move.

Maths

This week the children have been starting to look at capacity, volume and mass. The children had provocations to interact with, so that teachers could understand their prior knowledge and thinking.

Chinese

In the Chinese classrooms, the Year 2 children begun their inquiry into nature and plants. They will look into the various parts of a plant, the role of plants in our lives and explore into how to take care of nature. Connections to learning are made using Chinese stories, songs, rhymes and games.

Suggestions for Supporting Learning at Home

Sharing the Planet is our new unit!

Continue to look at different plants around your homes and surroundings. Take photos of these plants and bring them in to share with the class. A few children have done this already and we have learnt a lot from them.
