Yr2 Curriculum Update – 04/05/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our twelfth edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children have been exploring and learning. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative.  Enjoy!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

We’re continuing to grow great learners as we inquire into how we share the planet with plants.  Students have looked carefully into the function of plants by asking questions such as, “How do plants grow?” and “What are the jobs of different parts of a plant?”  They have been using their reading skills to find information from non-fiction text, and they have been applying their writing skills by writing summaries of the information they found to answer their questions.

Our field trip to Lions Nature Center in Sai Kung has helped students see real-life examples of how we use plants.  After exploring a bamboo grove, some field crops and different herbs, they have learned our connection with plants–whether providing us with food, shelter or medicine, plants support our lives in important ways.   We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who joined us for the morning!

Students have also been gaining a greater understanding of how we can show appreciation and care for others and the world around us by engaging in play-based learning linked to plants and nature.  Some students spent time at The Sky Garden drawing plants, exploring the mini-farms, and building structures with fallen plant parts.

The search for patterns has continued in Maths.  Students are realizing more and more how patterns are a part of many aspects of Maths and our lives.  In order to communicate their understanding, they have been unpacking the meaning of important patterns vocabulary.  To further extend students’ thinking, many classes have begun to move from repeating patterns (e.g. green, green, blue) to number patterns and growing patterns (E.g., 2, 4, 6, 8 . . .  The pattern rule is to add 2 each time).  Students are beginning to learn the math game In/Out to try to crack the code for different number patterns.

Can you crack the code below?

How you can help at home

*Look around your neighbourhood to find examples of patterns in the real world.  Take photos and send them to school.
*Keep growing plants at home and let us know how they are progressing.
*Make your own challenges for In/Out number patterns. Bring them to school and see if you can stump the teachers.

If your children are taking action for ANY learning at home, please send us photos, videos or messages and we will make sure they get the chance to share with our class.
