Yr2 Curriculum Update – 05/10/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 4th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 2 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – How The World Works

This week, the students continued their learning journeys, inquiring into the central idea, ‘Forces affect the objects around us’

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

Personal inquiry time has provided students with plentiful learning opportunities to continue to question, explore and wonder how scientists investigate and measure. Students are now consistently using their skills of observation (using the 5 senses) to note how forces impact and connect to one another. Different collaborative-play based activities (e.g. magnets, water, etc) have served as the medium through which students continue to develop their science skills, progress through the different stages of the science inquiry cycle and collect evidence to support their investigations.

Within language, students continue to write informally about their own ideas, experiences and feelings connected to forces, using repetitive sentence structures (e.g. I like, I can, etc) and topic-specific vocabulary to create meaning and describe in greater detail. Meanwhile in Maths, a diverse range of problem solving tasks centred around place value are promoting greater creativity, conceptual understanding and imaginative approaches to students learning. Subsequently, students are now starting to recognise, model, read, write and order numbers up to three-digit numbers in sequence and apply place value to partition.

Chinese Year 2

In the “Who We Are” unit, the Year 2 children continues to inquire into how their actions can affect others and how to work together as a successful learning community. They learn through songs, rhymes, games and stories.
