Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

Forces affect objects around us.

 

Unit of Inquiry

Students continued to explore the different kinds of forces such as air pressure, gravity, friction, magnetism and water pressure. Some classes investigated the magnets in detail and created their own experiments using the scientific method. Students learned that magnets are made of iron and attract certain metals only that have iron in them. They also sorted the magnetic and non-magnetic materials. Students enjoyed learning about the poles of a magnet and wondered what made poles repel and attract each other.

Students unpacked the planning skill and looked at different kinds of plans. Classes created a criteria for making a successful plan and set targets for themselves to get better at this important skill.

This week students have worked hard on gaining facts and knowledge through various sources such as books, computers and asking experts. They read books and watched Brain Pop clips to gather new information to understand cause and effect relationship.

We continued working on our handwriting targets and used Nelson Program to work on some patterns. Other classes worked on understanding how to use cause and effect relationship to write a stronger conclusion for their experiments.

In measurement, students continued to work on understanding the concept of length and standard units. We explored the standard units by estimating the length of 1 metre and 1cm. Students collected items from the classrooms that they thought were 1 metre long and compared their chosen objects’ lengths with the metresticks. This task helped students to learn the measurement related vocabulary and know about the different tools they can use to measure long objects such as trundle wheel, measuring tape and metre stick. Furthermore, students applied their new learning by working out the length of 10 meters. Students also looked at how long was 1cm and created their own meter sticks. In number maintenance, students co-created a plan to help them solve a word problem and they continued working on the subtraction using mental calculation strategies.

‘Show and Tell’

We feel proud when our students take action on their learning. Every day we see a lot of excitement in our classrooms, as children bring artifacts and paraphernalia from home to talk about their understanding of forces and its connection with our day today life. We would like this to continue.

 

Important announcement

  • Student Led Conferences: As you are aware our SLC are on the 15th ( after school) and 16th of March (whole day) 2018. We hope you have already booked a slot to meet with your child to learn about their learning. Looking forward to seeing you all next week!
  • School fair: The Year Two team will be running a stall for the school fair on Saturday March 17th, 2018 from 11:30 – 4:30pm.The Year 2 stall will have a pitch on the 4th floor and is based on the story of Goldilocks.

    We are looking for volunteers to fill half hour or one hour slots, working alongside teachers to help run the games and stamp passports and hand out the prizes.
