Yr2 Curriculum Update – 09/11/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 5th edition!

Greetings! – It’s our 6th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 2 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Who We Are

This week, the students conclude their learning journeys, inquiring into the central idea, ‘Forces affect the objects around us.’

Personal inquiry time has provided students with learning opportunities to plan, formulate and carry out their own scientific investigations connected to their interests in forces (e.g. magnets, floating & sinking, etc). Collaborative-play based activities have served as the medium through which students developed their science skills, progressing through the different stages of the science inquiry cycle and collect evidence to support their investigations.

You will know ‘Success’ at KJS has a specific definition. It is:

Achievement: What are we achieving? Within Maths, students have continued to explore a diverse range of problem solving tasks centred around place value promoting greater creativity, conceptual understanding and imaginative approaches to learning. Subsequently, students are now starting to recognise, model, read, write and order numbers up to three-digit numbers in sequence and apply place value to partition. Meanwhile in Language, students have continued to create their informational books connected to forces, containing the different features of non-fiction texts

Agency: What agentic opportunities have we had?  The students shared their learning and discussed their targets with both parents and teacher during three way conferences, communicating the message of how home and school will work in partnership to support success for every child.

Respect: How are we developing a respectful community? Students have accepted responsibility with regards to the 6Rs (i.e. reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, repair & rot) through initiatives like composting and recycling, attempting to end plastic, paper & metal pollution at KJS.

Opportunity: What opportunities have we had? The students are now familiar with the expectations in Y2 shared learning area connected to their expected and unexpected choices.

Wellbeing: How are we developing a sense of wellbeing? Students have started to create their own motifs representing wellbeing at KJS. These motifs have expressed through the creative mediums of loose parts, painting, mosaics, collage and sketches.

Chinese

In the Chinese classrooms, Year 2 children continue to inquire into how their actions can affect others and how to work together as a successful learning community. They learn through songs, rhymes, games and stories.
