Yr2 Curriculum Update – 15/03/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to the 13th edition!

Sharing the Planet: “Plants sustain life on Earth and play a role in our lives”

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The children have been exploring their wonders to begin to explore how plants grow and contribute to life on Earth. In the classroom they have been observing the parts of plants closely using microscopes, magnifying glasses and drawing detailed sketches. They have also been researching the functions of the different parts of the plant. When researching the children have been applying their reading skills and their organisational skills to record what they’ve found. The children have been starting to make connections with how plants grow and will now inquire into this further.

The children have visited Lion’s Park this week to deepen their learning into plants further. Talk to your children about the trip and ask them:

What plants did you see?

What did the different plants do to help us?

What did you learn that you didn’t know before?

We would also like to take this chance to thank the parent volunteers that attended and made this learning opportunity possible.

Literacy

The children have continued to look at different types of poems. They have created a success criteria of what a poem is and have started to write their own based on the story/poem ‘Plants Can’t Sit Still’.  Ask your child about the poem they’ve been writing.

Maths

This week the children have been continuing to look at capacity, volume and mass, while starting to investigate subtraction. They have been looking at the fastest and slowest ways to subtract and have been discussing which are more efficient and why. They have also been thinking about strategies and the tools that they can use to subtract.

Chinese

Year 2 children continue their inquiry into nature and plants. They continue to explore the role of plants and how to take care of them. Connections to learning are made using Chinese stories, songs, rhymes and games.

Here’s a glimpse of the happenings in some of our classrooms:

Suggestions for Supporting Learning at Home

Continue to look at different plants around your homes and surroundings. Take photos of these plants and bring them in to share with the class. Some children have done this already and we have learnt a lot from them.
