Yr2 Curriculum Update – 15/06/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

Knowing about family history helps us understand the relationship between past and present.

Unit of Inquiry

Students continued to explore the concept of connection and reflected on the important events in their life and how their lives are similar and different from their parents and grandparents. Students used their questioning skills to create some relevant questions, and used them to interview their parents. Now students have begun to build their personal timelines using the information that they collected.

This week Year 2 went on our trip to the History Museum. Students looked at the artifacts and learned how the history was recorded in different ways and how the past was similar and different from the present. Here is some student voice from the trip:

“We learned that in the past telephones operators helped people calling each other and it was not automated. Maybe it was because antennas were not invented then.”

By Ayden

“We learned that trams were used in the olden days in Hong Kong and we still use them in some parts of Hong Kong now.”

By Trevor and Dheer

“I learned that phone were big and bulky in the past.”

By Jamie and Jess

We really enjoyed this trip and they learned about the primary and secondary sources of information.

Year 2’s have been learning to write narratives. This week some classes learned about the different parts of a simple story and worked on creating their own stories. Other classes worked on using the descriptive language to describe the characters and settings.

In Maths, children continued learning about the properties of different 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional shapes. They learned the vocabulary associated with 2D and 3D shapes, such as vertex, edge, face and parallel lines.

How you can help at home?

We are working on our unit ‘Where We are in Time And Place’.

Using the password located in your child’s diary, please encourage your child to go onto the KJS website www.kjs.edu.hk  and browse our Splat page to access Brainpop Jr., Big Universe and Pebblego to learn more about how life was similar and different 100 years ago.
