Yr2 Curriculum Update – 18/05/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our twelfth edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children have been exploring and learning. This week, some of our Year 2 students have written our update.  Enjoy their perspective!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

We have been learning a lot about how plants support us. We sorted baskets of things that come from plants and we figured out that plants give us food, furniture, paper, clothing, and medicine.  We searched around KJS for plants that help us, and we saw big trees that block wind, stop mudslides and give us shade. During our reading sessions, we tried to find even more information about how we use different parts of plants. Now,

we are making plans for our Flower Market trip so we can buy plants that help KJS.

We enjoyed reading stories, such as The Last Tiger, The Curious Garden and The Mbobo Tree to think about our responsibility towards plants. The stories taught us that we need plants to make the world colourful and healthy, so we need to plant more of them.

After learning about different kinds of plants that help us, we created our own plants and drew them.  Then, we tried using adjectives and strong verbs to write descriptions.  Next, we’re going to check them, fix them up and publish them for others to read.  Some classes have been writing instructions for how to sow seeds.

Our main transdisciplinary skill is presenting.  It’s important because we can show what we learn in different ways like talking or acting it out.  We love the iPads and we have had fun learning to present our ideas using Adobe Spark, an app that helps us make a video slide show.

In Maths, we are thinking about how growing patterns grow each term.  You add some more elements.  Sometimes growing patterns can be number patterns and they can grow in even or odd numbers.  We created patterns by our own selves and our buddies had to think about how many elements in term 10.  We’ve been noticing that patterns are connected to adding, skip counting and equal groups (multiplication).

Here are the some of the learning challenges that have excited us this week:
*We planted chili seeds with Mr. Melson, a plant expert.
*We started composting our snack and lunch scraps to make good, new soil.
*We are doing experiments with bean seeds to see what plants need to grow.

Thank you for reading our message!

How you can help at home

*Try composting at home

*Make your own paper

*Create a growing number pattern and have your parents guess the rule.

*Look for examples of arrays (equal groups arranged in rows) in your daily life

If your children are taking action for ANY learning at home, please send us photos, videos or messages and we will make sure they get the chance to share with our class.

As you may know, students at KJS change classes when they move to Year 3.  Over the next few    weeks, we will be working hard to compile the new classes.  For your information, we ask students to list 4 or 5 peers with whom they would enjoy learning next year and we consider their perspectives and friendships when we make our decisions.  Please note that we do not guarantee students will be placed with someone from their personal lists as we have 8 or 9 other factors we need to consider as well to ensure balanced classes.   Thank you for your understanding.
