Yr2 Curriculum Update – 20/04/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our third term of the school year!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children have been exploring and learning. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative. Enjoy!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

We have moved on to our new unit of inquiry related to sharing the planet with plants. To establish a foundation of understanding and knowledge, students have considered what we share on our planet and with whom or what? We have also looked at a variety of real-life objects to try to define the difference between living and non-living things. The thinking frame, “I see, I think, I wonder” helped our learners begin to communicate what they know about our natural world and what they would like to investigate further. While exploring, students applied their reading skills by trying to find interesting information in nonfiction texts.

As is often the case after a holiday, students were eager to share their exciting experiences, which they were given the opportunity to do by reviewing and writing recounts. They were encouraged to work independently at both writing and editing their work by rereading and checking the success criteria.

Maths investigations centered around finishing different forms of measurement (e.g. mass, capacity) and beginning to look at different kinds of patterns. Students tried to extend and create linear patterns as well as representing them in different ways.   For example, some students tried to change colour patterns, such as red, red blue, to corresponding shape patterns, like circle, circle, square.

How you can help at home

You have an abundance of home opportunities that will help your children learn more about how we share the planet with plants. Here are some suggestions:

*Visit an organic farm (there are many in Yuen Long)

*Try growing some of your own plants. Herbs tend to grow well indoors if placed near a window.

*Wherever you are, look for evidence of how we use plant-based products in our lives.

*Go on a hike and take note of the different plants.

*Start a small compost pot at home

If your children are taking action for ANY learning at home, please send us photos, videos or messages and we will make sure they get the chance to share with our class. We want them to see that their learning isn’t for school….it’s for life.
