Yr3 Curriculum Update - 07/12/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our 8th edition!

In each update, the Year 3 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Three have been up to every 2 weeks. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative...and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning they have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning - It's all connected!

How we organise ourselves

‘The food we buy goes through a process of change before we eat it. ‘

We are almost at the end of our unit on food and the processes it goes through. It has been an extremely engaging opportunity for the children to think about everything from food packaging to food choices. They are asking thought provoking questions about how and why food comes from far distances - something many of us have observed in supermarkets. Going further into least processed foods (for example, locally sourced apples) and ‘ultra processed' ones (potato chips), they are building on their knowledge of why foods have preservatives and additives. We have also begun to create a giant flowchart in our Shared Area to show the complicated system of how food gets to us.

In some classes, the children have been applying their understanding by creating board games about the process a chosen food goes through.

A highlight this week has been our field trip to the farm! By next week all the classes would have had this wonderful, hands-on opportunity.

Literacy

In literacy, we have continued to build on our note-taking skills through flowcharts and storyboards by looking at non fiction texts and videos about food processes as well as fiction texts. We have begun to think of these food charts in terms of Information texts. The structure of these texts will help the children to write the most important parts of processes in sentences while adding introductions and conclusions to make a complete piece of writing.

Maths

In maths we are have begun an inquiry into the strategies we use to solve addition and subtraction problems. The children were able to collectively think of over 5 different strategies! They are beginning to share these strategies as a way to learn from each other and as they develop their number sense they will begin to think about which ones are efficient and which ones they are confident about using. The aim is to help them think of maths in a flexible way with several possible solutions and processes.

At home you might like to…

  • visit a wet market and have a discussion about the different kinds of fruits and vegetables in season

  • visit a supermarket and observe which fruits and vegetables have come to us from different countries. Why is this? What impact might this have on the environment?

  • design a mini system at home for washing, cutting, mixing foods to create a super salad!

  • choose a number and think of everything you associate with it, example, 5 (high five, five fingers on one hand and so on)

Chinese Year 3:

In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning. Connections to learning are made using Chinese songs, rhymes, games and stories.

Reminders

A few key reminders for students and parents:

  • Please remind your child to pack his/her school hat for each day, as children who do not bring their hat will not be allowed to take part in snack or lunch play.

  • There are extreme peanut allergies in Year 3, so please make sure your child does not bring nuts to school or eat peanut butter or nutella for breakfast before he/she heads to school.

  • Please remind your child to pack his/her own cutlery as we do not provide extra sets of cutlery at school.
