Yr3 Curriculum Update – 11/01/19

Welcome to our 9th edition!

In each update, the Year 3 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Three have been up to every 2 weeks. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning they have been doing!

How we organise ourselves

 ‘The food we buy goes through a process of change before we eat it. ‘

We had a fun filled last week of term. All classes enjoyed the field trip to the farm! What a wonderful culmination to the unit – harvesting carrots and lettuce, making a salad, feeding the rabbits and making pizza. We certainly had a good experience of the farming life!

We also enjoyed Sports Day. Thank you for coming along to support the children. We finished off the term with some Chrismassy crafts!

The Children also had an opportunity to practise their art skills, making Christmas crafts. What a busy last week of term!

and With The New Year we Start a New unit… Sharing the Planet

‘Water is essential to life and is a limited resource for many people.’

The children have started the first week back thinking about what they already know about water – Where water comes from? What it is used for? Why it is precious?

The children have recorded what they think at the beginning of the unit and we look forward to seeing their knowledge grow as the unit progresses.

One class have had an experience of limited access to water (just for one rather messy lesson). It has helped the children understand that water is a limited resource. The other classes will have the experience next week. Will they be able to cope?

Life can become quite tricky when you don’t have enough water!



In literacy, we have looked at non fiction texts, videos and images related to our unit to build up our knowledge about water. We have used the thinking routine See Think Wonder. This routine encourages the children to look carefully at the images they see in information texts, be it a book or a video, and then spend time processing this information by noticing what they are thinking and wondering.

We have also had more practice using the PEEK strategy when we read a page of information. Look at the Picture, Every heading, Every first and last sentence of a paragraph and what do you Know now. This strategy helps the children get the general gist of a piece of information and helps them to distinguish between the important details and the extra information.



In maths we are continuing our inquiry into the strategies we use to solve addition and subtraction problems. The children are discussing the strategies they use and are being shown some new strategies too.

The Jump strategy. Make jumps of ten and then jumps of one.



The children continue to develop their number sense as they discuss which strategies are efficient and which ones they are confident about using.

The children have also been given opportunities to apply their addition and subtraction skills to solve open ended problems. This problem caused excitement in some classes. It involved persistence, determination and a systematic approach!


At home you might like to…

  • Read a story with your child
  • Discuss with your child how you would solve 18 + 6. What strategy would you use?
  • Discuss how water is used in your home
  • Look at your water bill with your child. Is there anything you could do conserve water?
  • Discuss with your child where we in Hong Kong get our water from


Chinese Year 3:

In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning. Connections to learning are made using Chinese songs, rhymes, games and stories.

A few key reminders for students and parents:

  • Please remind your child to pack his/her school hat for each day, as children who do not bring their hat will not be allowed to take part in snack or lunch play.
  • There are extreme peanut allergies in Year 3, so please make sure your child does not bring nuts to school or eat peanut butter or nutella for breakfast before he/she heads to school.
  • Please remind your child to pack his/her own cutlery as we do not provide extra sets of cutlery at school.
