Yr3 Curriculum Update - 15/02/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Kung Hei Fat Choy - Wishing you all a Happy Year of the pig!

Welcome to our 11th edition!

In each update, the Year 3 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Three have been up to every 2 weeks. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative...and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning they have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning - It's all connected!
‘Water is essential to life and is a limited resource for many people.'

The children have experienced what it is like to have a limited amount of water. All these messy activities and a limited amount of water for drinking, washing, cleaning and painting.

How did the children feel?

“I'm thirsty but I don't want to drink the water.”

“Can I go and wash my hands?”

“We're running out of water.”

“This is so sticky.”

The children have also realised that for some people getting water isn't as easy as turning on the tap. Sometimes a long journey to a waterhole or a well might be involved! Carrying water over long distances can be tough. We can only begin to imagine how challenging that can be!

First week Back after CHINese New Year we have revisited our weLL BeinG unit.
‘Making choices that develop respectful relationships with ourselves, others and the environment define who we are as individuals and a community.'

We are setting up “zones of regulation” in our classrooms. We have been identifying the different emotions that we can experience. Our zones include a calm and happy zone where optimal learning will take place, the sad zone, the angry zone and the nervous, anxious zone. We have discussed what causes us to feel these emotions during the school day, how we can manage these emotions and what we can do to get us into the calm, happy zone ready for learning.

Literacy

The children are continuing to look at poetry. We have read poetry books, discussed poems that we like and thought about the reasons why we like them.

We have looked at the structure of a variety of poems and used the poets structure to write poems of our own. Here is one example:-

Maths

In maths we are starting to look at measurement beginning with non standard units of measure before we progress to using standard units of measurement e.g. centimetres, metres, millilitres and litres. The children are estimating measurements before they take actual measurements to get a feel for the size of standard measurements.

At home you might like to…

  • Read a story with your child - or perhaps another poem!

  • Bake a cake - that involves a few measurements! - infact any activity that will involve using measurement perhaps have a 100 metre race, try and find things in the apartment that are more or less than 1 metre long or more or less than 10 centimetres long.

Reminders

A few key reminders for students and parents:

  • Please remind your child to pack his/her school hat for each day, as children who do not bring their hat will not be allowed to take part in snack or lunch play.

  • There are extreme peanut allergies in Year 3, so please make sure your child does not bring nuts to school or eat peanut butter or nutella for breakfast before he/she heads to school.

  • Please remind your child to pack his/her own cutlery as we do not provide extra sets of cutlery at school.
