Yr3 Curriculum Update – 20/04/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Central Idea:  Artists can use scientific principles to create.

Light, Sound and a Living Museum!

This week we offer you a special look back on our trip to the Science Museum, our investigations into the way that light and sound work and how we can get creative with those and, last but not least, our tremendous Living Museum!

The Science Museum

We visited the Hong Kong Science Museum specifically to interact with the sound and light exhibits in the basement.  It was great fun and we learned about sound waves and that light is part of a wider spectrum!

Science in School

Each of the Year 3 teachers took elements of light and sound that we can control, such as the brightness or colour of light, or the volume or pitch of sound.  Then each teacher conducted demonstrations to excite, inspire and cause wonder in the learners.

The Living Museum

We want to say a very special thank you to everyone who came to the living museum last week.  The children were thrilled to have so many of their grown-ups in school for something that they had worked so hard for and managed to present despite the ‘flu doing its best to disrupt our plans!

We especially wanted to say thank you to you all for your attitude and enthusiasm for the event.  As teachers it was uplifting to see parents and other carers visiting not only the groups involving their children, but many other groups too!  It was certainly one of the strongest senses of community that many of us remember feeling in KJS.  Thank you so much for that!

A quick visit from Mr McArthur

Mr McArthur dropped in to talk to us about how he uses an artist’s notebook.  He takes his notebooks everywhere with him and whenever he sees things that seem interesting to him he collects those things in the book.  He does this by sketching, colouring, painting and writing in his notebook.

Each Y3 learner has been given an artist’s notebook to collect their inspiration for the new unit of inquiry and we thank Mr McArthur for sharing his expertise with us.

Maths

The last two weeks were spent working on time and fractions.  The children continued to work with time in divisions of five minutes, recognising times on the hour, the quarter hour and those between, such as 20 minutes past the hour or ten minutes to the hour.

English

Most of our reading and writing was related to our preparation for the Living Museum.  We were reading about the significant individuals we were studying right up until the last moment and then we went straight into writing biographies and scripts.
