Yr3 Curriculum Update – 23/03/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Unit of Inquiry:

Exploration and Discovery lead to change

The children have spent the last two weeks choosing people of interest within areas such as science, the arts and transportation, among others. They used graphic organisers to research the important events in these people’s lives. Our aim while researching is to help children understand the research rather than merely copy down reams of information. The children have organised themselves into different roles within their groups. Some have chosen to prepare for the Living museum independently. The ‘researcher’ was the only one allowed to access the internet to find out specific information and was responsible for reading, understanding and retelling it to the rest of the group who recorded it. This ensured a higher level of actual understanding and was very successful!

Many groups have been preparing speeches and creating posters to communicate the importance of their chosen individuals.

Our Living museum will be on  Friday, 20th April from 1:30. More information will be sent out closer to the date.

Last week saw two wonderful occasions which celebrate what it means to be a part of KJS. The first was the Student Led Conference (SLC) and the second was the school fair, Once Upon a Time.

The SLC was an opportunity for students to celebrate their learning and the skills they have learned since the start of year 3. It was wonderful to witness the pride and confidence with which they shared their achievements. Thank you parents, for taking the time to be a part of this very important event!  The fair, was a huge success as well and the excitement was palpable!

A very successful school fair!

Student Led Conference – a chance to celebrate the learning taking place!

English

The children have written biographies of their chosen individuals. They are now beginning to convert that information into a speech. We have discussed what makes a good speaker. Some inspiring speakers include Martin Luther King Jr and Former U.S. president Barack Obama. The children are being given opportunities to speak in front of an audience, keeping in mind body language, eye contact and voice projection. Some classes have been practising these skills through debating or presenting arguments forcefully while still being respectful.

Maths

It was also Maths Day last week (what a busy week!)  There was a lot of imagination in the air as ‘Fraction Man’ proved with his amazing costume. What a great day to remind ourselves about the role maths plays in our lives and how we all can enjoy it!

After a fun few weeks on telling the time, we have begun fractions. The children are exploring what makes fractions and where we use them in our real world. We are encouraging children to think beyond pizzas and see fractions in shapes and in many other areas.

Remember

We have a field trip on Tuesday, 27th March to the Science Museum. The focus will be on light and sound and how our senses work. There will be no parent volunteers for this trip. Children will wear their regular school uniform and will be back in time for lunch.

Also, there will be no multi sports club on Thursday, 29th March.

Have a wonderful Easter Break!
