Yr3 Curriculum Update - 24/05/19Working together to achieve success for every childWelcome to our 17th edition! In each update, the Year 3 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Three have been up to every 2 weeks. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative...and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning they have been doing! Transdisciplinary Learning - It's all connected! ‘Exploration and discovery leads to change.' The children have begun tuning in to their final unit for Year 3. We have had some interesting discussions about what the first telephone might have looked like. Our first thoughts about what the first telephones looked like - Doesn't that make you feel old! We have also recorded our first thoughts about how messages were communicated before the telephone. We will build on these first thoughts by developing our knowledge of life in the past. This will help us to understand what life was like before an invention was designed and built. Some of us have also been thinking about what telephones will look like in the future! We have also been focusing on the attributes of explorers and inventors. What skills and dispositions do they need? We also asked the question can we in Year 3 be explorers and inventors? Maths In maths we are continuing to look at pattern. We are focusing on the concept of multiplication and looking for patterns in the times tables. An interesting question was asked by a student “Is plus 2 the same as x2?” A good question to help us to understand the concept of multiplication. Here are some children's responses to the question. It is only the same for 2+ 2 and 2 x2 answered Tiffany. Sahil gave an example as to why it isn't the same giving the example of 30 + 2 = 32 and 30 x 2 = 60. Sahil built on Yui's example of 2 x 1 = 2 and 2+1 =3 Here we are building our knowledge of the concept of multiplication. Literacy In Literacy we are continuing to write stories. The children have written a first draft of their own stories based on personal interest. What a creative and imaginative bunch we have! We are now looking at stories written by published authors, analysing the structure. What does the beginning, middle and end of a story look like? We are also trying to develop our own characters. How can we show what the character is like through what they say and do? What is important to our characters? Over the next few weeks we will continue to go through the writing process improving, embellishing and revising our first draft. What can you infer about the characters from the show don't tell of these sentences? Jack's new labrador puppy never left his side. Jan flew into the room with a huge smile on her face. Chinese Year 3: In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning. Connections to learning are made using Chinese songs, rhymes, games and stories. Here is a glimpse of some of our classrooms: At home you might like to…
