Yr3 Curriculum Update - 29/03/19Working together to achieve success for every child Welcome to our 14th edition! In each update, the Year 3 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Three have been up to every 2 weeks. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative...and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning they have been doing! Transdisciplinary Learning - It's all connected! ‘A scientific understanding of natural hazards reduces the impact on human societies.' The children are tuning in to our new unit which comes under the theme “How the World Works.” The children have been thinking about what they already know about how the world works and what they know about weather. They have had an opportunity to visit different classrooms in Year Three to find out about natural hazards including floods, avalanches, typhoons, earthquakes and volcanoes. It has started to get us thinking about natural disasters.  Literacy This week we have introduced our new writing form: news reports. Students have inquired into ‘what does a news report look like?' They have found the features of news reports by watching news reports and reading the young post. We have learnt about headlines, quotes, interviews and eye-witnesses, as well as searching for the 5 ws: what, when, where, who and why. To get involved, discuss the news headlines with your child and explore the children's news sites that can be found through splat.  During our reading time we have been focusing on noticing what we think as we read We shared our thoughts about what we have read in small groups. Maths In maths we continue to explore and investigate different types of measurement. We have been learning about capacity. How much is 50 millilitres? What does 50 millilitres look like in different containers? Can you make a potion measuring out 250ml of dragon's blood and 100ml of the the essence of Earth. I wonder where Ms. Knappman got the dragon's blood!  Chinese Year 3: In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning.
