Yr4 Curriculum Update – 05/10/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Y4 Camp

Please find the kit list and medical form included in this newsletter email – these camp forms will only be shared via email, so please print off a copy at home if needed. Medical forms are due before Friday, November 16. You only have to fill out the medical form if your child takes regular medication or if they take medication in case they need it (eg: allergies).

We will be having a camp meeting for parents on Tuesday, October 23 at 3 pm in the Y4 shared area. If you have specific questions closer to the camp date, please get in touch with your child’s teacher. We will be going to camp on November 19th, 20th and 21st. We will leave KJS Monday, November 19th in the morning and coming back on Wednesday, November 21st in the afternoon.

Tip #5: Set aside a day to go over the kit list with your child and to label everything (and we mean everything!) with their name. Everything from coats to hats to socks and underwear need to be labeled clearly with your child’s name. Make sure to go to the shops and buy whatever is missing from the kit list! Or you could even ask friends of older children if you could borrow items you don’t have. Practicing packing and unpacking their camp bag will be a huge help for everyone, as each student will be responsible for looking after their own things.

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

Consumer choice affects people’s lives and the environment.

UOI & Literacy

Students have picked one of the following problems to work on around KJS and they have been working together to persuade their audiences to be part of the solution:

How can we make our school events more sustainable?

What system can we create so our uniforms can be re-used?

What can we do with our unwanted toys and books?

What system can be created to ensure our stationery is taken care of?

What system can we create to reduce our food waste and food packaging waste?

Students then had the opportunity to rotate to our different classrooms to hear about 5 different ways they could present. The Y4 teachers each took a presentation style and created a mini-presentation about the most important aspects of it. They were: Pecha Kucha, Google Slides, posters, infographics and Tiny Talks; students then decided in their groups which presentation style they wanted to try for their persuasive presentation. Their enthusiasm and excitement has been wonderful to see! They will be presenting to each other next week.

Last week we also had the Hong Kong based non-profit Redress come in to talk to the Y4 students about the amount of waste that is created by the fashion industry in Hong Kong. Students learned some fascinating facts and ways they could help make a difference! KJS will be hosting a clothing drive during the month of October/November, so keep an eye out for more information!

Maths

Students have continued learning how to rename and partition numbers, as well as forming 3 to 5 digit numbers with words. Learning that vocabulary not only is important in understanding place value, but it builds their understanding of how we say these large numbers.

A lot of facts and data that students are coming across in their research, has large numbers. Building that place value understanding is vital so they can begin to understand just what 1,000 means or what 10,000 is!

They are also being exposed to how to interpret graphs and infographics as a quick way to learn important facts that are connected to our current UOI:

Key maths vocabulary

partitioning, represent, recognise, order numbers, place value columns, manipulatives, units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand

Mandarin

In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning.

Reminders

  • In line with our unit about making sustainable consumer choices, think of earth friendly ways that your child can celebrate their birthday! As a gentle reminder, we cannot celebrate birthdays with cakes or other treats due to different food allergies.
