Yr4 Curriculum Update – 10/11/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of our Unit of Inquiry, the children are preparing to analyse and improve a school system. The children have developed their own signs and focussed on justifying their design choices of shape, colour and symbol using the knowledge they have gained to date. We have spent time considering classroom systems and the children have been given the opportunity to develop or improve systems to make our classrooms more efficient. The children have continued to develop their analysis skills throughout the unit and have considered systems in terms of their parts, processes and complexities.

Mr O’Reilly spoke to the students about the systems in school he would like them to improve.

We enjoyed dressing up for Halloween!

In language the children are continuing to write non chronological reports. Using the co constructed success criteria the children are beginning to revise and edit their writing before publishing their final report. We are continuing to read a range of non-fiction texts to supplement our understanding of the features and style of non-chronological reports.

Sarah Brennan shared her new book with us and talked about her use of symbols in her stories.

In Maths we have continued to focus on written methods for subtraction and extending students’ skills to solve word problems. The students enjoyed solidifying their skills and creating their own word problems which they have shared with each other and the class. Students have also reviewed their skills of estimation and rounding in order to check the accuracy of their answers.

A date for your diaries:

Remember that camp is coming up on the 20th to 22nd of November. We will leave school on Monday between 9:00 and 9:30. Please refer to the attached kit list and try not to add too many extras as the children will be expected to carry their rucksacks from the bus to the dorms. Children must bring a separate day back-pack to carry their day-to-day items and it is essential that they bring a packed lunch and snack for Monday. All children are required to carry a refillable water bottle at all times. Finally, if you have any prescribed medicine that your child needs to take, please bring this to school in individually labelled bags clearly stating the child’s name, dosage and time to be taken. This must be brought into the school nurse by Monday 12th November and accompanied by a completed medical authorisation document. This can be found on the website – click on Communication then click General Information, then Health and Safety and scroll down to prescribed medication where there is a link to the form.

How you can help at home

In order for the children to know what they are taking to camp, it is important that they are responsible for packing their bag (with adult supervision of course).

Remember if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s learning and wellbeing at school please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance
