Yr5 Curriculum Update - 09/11/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Transdisciplinary Learning – It's all connected!

Year 5 students have been tuning into biodiversity through engaging immersion sessions led by the Year 5 teachers.  They attended 3 informative sessions exploring including The 3 levels of Biodiversity, Deforestation, The loss of Bees, Plastic Free Seas and Coral Reefs. We have had the privilege of working with Mr Melson, one of Hong Kong's leading experts in local flora and fauna. These hands-on sessions have given students the opportunity to apply the skill of analysis in order to learn about the parts and purposes of seeds, and their importance to Hong Kong's harmony.

Last week, we started our new unit about biodiversity. We were lucky enough to have Mr. Melsom come in and work with small groups to find out about biodiversity in Hong Kong. We talked alot about native and non-native trees. We looked at different seeds and discovered which ones can be eaten and spread by birds. We learned that because lots of non-native trees have been planted in Hong Kong, the native birds can't eat and spread the seeds of these trees. This is a big problem because the birds then have to find new places to get their food and they cannot help new trees grow (by spreading seeds). Mr. Melsom helped us understand the importance of planting more native trees in Hong Kong.

Literacy

In the new unit of inquiry, students will continue to develop their explanation writing by applying their knowledge of the text's organisational and language features. Persuasive writing will also play a big role in the coming weeks.

Please remember to encourage your child to read widely from a range of books at home. Reading will support your child's language development and broaden their use of vocabulary.

Maths

Students have been consolidating their conceptual understandings in place value by exploring decimal numbers and big numbers.

We will be moving into the use of the 4 operations

(ie. adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) and data handling.

Chinese

In Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning.

Here is a glimpse of some of our classrooms:
