Yr5 Curriculum Update - 10/05/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our final term for the 2018/2019 year.  This term is very exciting as we get deep into our unit of inquiry and prepare for Market Day.  Students will no doubt have already shared their innovative ideas for their businesses and products as they passionately create their business plan to present to the ‘Dragons Den' in the coming weeks.  A more detailed letter explaining Market Day will be shared with you soon.

Unit of Inquiry

Our current Unit of Inquiry is: How We Organise Ourselves and How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea

Producers and consumers play interdependent roles within a business system.

Lines of Inquiry

  • What businesses need to work (form)

  • The techniques of media (function)

  • The interdependence of the parts of a business (connection)

  • The ethical responsibility of producers and consumers in a market economy (responsibility)

Last week students were excited to have a hands-on learning experience where they were able to learn new makers skills. The children had an opportunity to try:

  • Coding

  • Weaving

  • Sewing

  • Cardboard construction

  • Video Making

  • Paper Circuits

The students are expected to utilise one of the skills in the upcoming Market Day, which will take place on Wednesday June 12th.

Literacy

The children have been learning about asking a variety of questions. They have focused on writing open and closed question in preparation for undertaking a market research survey. This will support their product development and their pricing strategy.

The students  have analysed and evaluated slogans of well-known brands and had a go at creating their own slogan  for their own business that they have set up. The slogans are short and simple, often no more than three words and related to the product. Many groups have use alliteration to make them memorable.

Maths

The focus for Maths over the coming weeks will be on using our maths knowledge to keep track of our finances for our business.  We will use google sheets to calculate unit cost, total cost, profit and loss.  We will also be conducting market research where we will collect, organise and interpret data to help inform our business decisions.  As well as the financial business maths, we have also started an inquiry into fractions.

Chinese

In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning.

Here is a glimpse of some of our classrooms:

Kind regards,

The Year 5 team
