Yr5 Curriculum Update – 15/06/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Our  Transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry: How we organise ourselves: “Producers and consumers play interdependent roles in the economic system”

Dear Parents

Our Unit of Inquiry on businesses is really hotting up! All the groups have been busy using their maker skills to create products and games for ourl market day on June 22. Some students presented their learning in this week’s school assembly and everyone is highly engaged and excited. While the students are very focused on what they are learning, we are also keeping the skills we are learning front and centre. After the unit is over, our main goal is that students take their improved teamwork and time management skills up to Year 6 with them.

Classes have continued their unit of dance with Mrs Tucker.  Groups have developed a dance around the concepts of systems and teamwork. Their moving machines and canons have been really impressive.

In Maths, we have been learning how to apply our knowledge of spreadsheets to our business models. Using a spreadsheet helps keep control of costs and and allows groups to predict how much profit they will make at different prices. Students have begun to learn how to use formulas to automate the calculations.

Students have used their business plan writing to pitch their ideas to the ‘dragons’. Not all the groups were successful first time of asking and were asked to go back to their plans and improve them before they were granted the ‘cash’! Some really valuable learning has taken place about preparation and presentation…
