Yr5 Curriculum Update – 24/05/19

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

As you know we are in the middle of Market Day preparations. Students have begun presenting their business plans to the Dragons Den in order to get the $200 or $250 they need to buy their materials. When the students receive a yes from the Dragons, they will be given the money in cash. Please support your child in sourcing the materials they need. We do ask that the students keep the receipts as part of their financial record keeping. We appreciate your help with this.

Unit of Inquiry

Our current Unit of Inquiry is: How We Organise Ourselves and How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea

Producers and consumers play interdependent roles within a business system.

Lines of Inquiry

  • What businesses need to work (form)
  • The techniques of media (function)
  • The interdependence of the parts of a business (connection)
  • The ethical responsibility of producers and consumers in a market economy (responsibility)

Students have begun presenting their business plans to the Dragons Den. Each class agreed on success criteria they felt was important to include in their business plans to support their products.  Students are working in groups to design their products, record their market research, financial budget and give a description of their products.  Each group has been diligently designing their prototypes to present to the Dragons. Students have been using their group decision making skills and time management in order to create a successful business.

Literacy

The main focus for writing this week will be the use of graphs and images to enhance a message. The students will be utilising this in their Dragons’ Den presentations in the coming days. The groups are using the Learner Profile of Communicators both to prepare and present their market research findings.

The other focus in writing will be Word Choice. This is one of the six traits of writing that we are learning about in order to analyse and improving our writing skills. This will be particularly useful as the students begin to design their marketing campaigns to promote their product sales.

Maths

We continue to inquire into fractions for our maths learning. The central idea for this inquiry is Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships. Students are exploring how fractions, decimals and percentages are represented (Form), how fractions can help us describe the world around us (Connection) and how fractions work (Function).

Chinese

In the Chinese classrooms, we continue to focus on the concept of wellbeing and providing different learning opportunities for children to explore their own interests and promote agentic learning.

Kind regards,

The Year 5 team
