Yr6 Curriculum Update - 07/12/18Working together to achieve success for every childThe Year 6 Team    Welcome to the 8th edition of our Year 6 Curriculum Update! It has been an amazing experience to watch our students over the week on our Y6 camp. Students surprised us with the enthusiasm they showed during all the activities on the camp. The way our students supported each other, managed their chores themselves and negotiated high ropes and kayaking like superheroes was super impressive. A big “well done” to all of our Year 6 students for showing so many attributes of the Learner Profile! In each update, you will be able to see glimpses of the learning journey that our students have been involved in over the previous two weeks. Our Learning Journey is written by teachers and students. Students' reflection on camp Persevering on the gorge hike: I persevered on the hike and I didn't give up though it was fairly tiring. I believe I pushed myself harder and harder to accomplish the challenge of the activity. Though I felt a little nervous during the high elements I still overcame my fear and did it because my friends, team mates and teachers encouraged me by saying things like… “we got your back” or “you can do this”. By: Dhyana Shah 6L On the High Elements: I pushed myself to go on the high elements, I was kind of scared at first but I still tried and I did it, when I did it I felt really proud of myself. By: Shrishti Pai 6P When I was doing Kayaking I feel it was a fun experience for yourself. Sometimes it was fun sometimes it was scary because we were afraid to fall down. Well, that was in the morning. But in the afternoon we had a lot of fun. Hope we can do it again in the future. By: Jenny Han 6G Transdisciplinary Learning – It's all connected! This is the last week for the heritage unit. In Inquiry, we began researching for our summative task. Our task was to choose a site, tradition, or an artifact that has not been preserved by UNESCO as yet and justify its inclusion in our KJS Museum using the criteria created by UNESCO. As part of our summative assessment, we have to also create 3D models of places around the world that we would like to conserve and include in our KJS museum. Some classes have also created their own websites to showcase their learning. In Writing, we continued writing historical narratives. In Maths, we have been learning to reduce and enlarge 2D shapes and 3D objects. A scale is a way to compare sizes with an object. We have been really busy completing our 3D models. Scale factors are used for enlarging and reducing models. Example: in the pictures below, anything with the size of "1" would have a size of "100" in the real world, so a measurement of 22,2000cm would be 2,2220 cm (1:100).  Here is a photo of a Kowloon Walled City model which has built to a scale factor of 1:100 of the actual city.  In Mandarin, some kids have been doing Chinese ink painting, they drew bamboo sticks and pandas. Some classes have also been learning about Christmas celebrations, gratitude, kindness and appreciation by listening to stories, making Christmas cards, singing songs and lots more. During Music, we have been performing our composed music in front of our class. Since Christmas is nearly upon us, we have also been singing Christmas carols. Library news: In the library, we have been doing a book bag contest and the winner in Y6 is Jaeyun(6L), Charlotte(6L) and Audrey(6E). 
Our next unit is about energy, different forms, sources and consequences of energy consumption. In order to learn more about renewable sources of energy, we will visit Zero Carbon Building. It has been a wonderful learning opportunity for all of us to draft, edit, take photographs and publish the curriculum updates. We really enjoyed it. Wishing all the moms and dads...
