Yr6 Curriculum Update – 09/11/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Year 6 Team

A very happy Diwali to all our Indian parents and students!

In each update, you will be able to see glimpses of the learning journey that our students have been involved in over the previous two weeks. Our Learning Journey is written by teachers and students. We have started our new Unit under the Transdisciplinary theme ‘ Where We Are in Place and Time’’. It has been a fantastic week. Year 6 ’s went on a trip to Kowloon Walled City and explored if it should have been considered as a heritage of Hong Kong. It was heartening to see our historians in action, gathering the information from the visitors through surveys and observing the remnants of the city.

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

In Inquiry, The Y6 students are exploring and interacting with other people’s heritage, learning what heritage truly means, what makes heritage important, and why it needs to be preserved. They also went on a field trip to the Kowloon Walled City Park to learn about Hong Kong’s heritage. They had interviewed several residents that had lived in Kowloon Walled City. Some classes used a drama staretgy called Hot Seating to investigate different perspectives connected with Kowloon Walled City. Hot Seating is a strategy in which a character or characters, played by the teacher or a student, are interviewed by the rest of the group.

Update: We are going to watch a movie about plastic in the ocean. You can find more information here. Trailer of the movie

In Writing, Students have been starting a new unit on narrative writing. 6A has made magpie books to magpie some words from a book. Some classes have been learning to paint pictures with strong verbs.

In Maths, the students went to different maths workshops that helped them with working on their skills which they didn’t know. Such as negative numbers, estimating, unit conversion, decimal numbers and renaming. This week we have also started our Shape and Space in Maths.

During Music, the children are using the D Dorian Mode to compose a piece of Renaissance music. We have really enjoyed the experience. Moreover, we have also been learning Diwali songs from Mr. Davenport. In Mandarin, this week children did salt writing. We used salt to write the different characters, and practised our stroke order.

Library news: Our librarians and library monitors are really working hard! So many new scholastic books, such as graphic novels, fiction books have been added to our library recently. Ms. Lau would like to encourage our Year 6 students to read books in different languages and to support this she has starteda website to post videos of kids in K.J.S reading books in different languages.

Special News: The students have had their first camp meeting, it was exciting because we got to know a lot more in detail about what we are going to do on camp.  I am very thrilled and eager about the activities, which are: Abseiling, Gorge trekking, kayaking, stand up surfing and lots more.  Dhyana Shah 6L

There’s a company called SHREYA’S in Bangalore, India and they are an NGO. Shreyas works with orphans and underprivileged children. They are looking to build a library, and as these children are so innocent and young, the least we can do is help to educate them. So, dear parents please help by donating some simple children books (3-10yrs). You can send them into school starting from 13th November- 30th November. Sahaana Gulrajani 6G
