Message from Head of School

This weekend I have been thinking about which lantern to bring on Friday to the PTA Lantern Festival! Starting at 5.30pm this event gives families an opportunity to gather together and celebrate Mid-Autumn. Please encourage your child to make a lantern then pack a picnic, bring a blanket and join in with all the fun! I look forward to seeing you all there.

This week we have a parent workshop for parents of our younger children ‘Learning to Read’. Please sign up on Gateway if you have not already done so.

This week you will have received UNIT OVERVIEWS. These outline the key learning for your child’s current Unit of Inquiry and give ideas for fun ways to support your child’s learning at home. They will be stored on the website under COMMUNICATION > YEAR GROUP UPDATES along with each year group’s weekly updates.

Next week (13th and 14th) the teachers have two days of training from the International Baccalaureate. We will be finding out how effective inquiry in classrooms can empower our learners and help them develop essential life long learning skills.  These teacher workshops, mandatory by the IB, are key to ensure that we are able to maintain the rigour and expectations of the Primary Years Programme.  If you would like to know more abou the IB PYP please sign up on Gateway for our ‘An Introduction to the PYP’ parent workshop on 20th September at 5pm.

The training days are followed by a public holiday (Friday 15th) which means a very short week for the children with only Monday and Tuesday in school. I do hope you are able to enjoy the five day ‘mini-break’ with your children – perhaps you will get a chance to try a couple of ideas from the Unit Overviews you have received.

Finally, please use the following link to access and ‘like’ our new official Facebook page! It will keep you posted with some of the exciting things that are happening at KJS! https://www.facebook.com/kjseduhk

Wishing you a wonderful week,

Karen Thomas

Head of School

Healthcare Charges

We have had some interest regarding the $40 charge for the Healthcare services as noted in the letter sent out this week. $20 will be for the Heathcare service as usual.  The additional $20 will be spent on transport – last year I noted that the buses sent by the health care services did not all have seat belts and so were not suitable for our children to use. To this end I have ordered our own buses to transport the children so that they can get to the dentist check up safely.
