Message from Head of School

Dear All,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Last week I had to stop a few children who were trying to make their way to the sweet/icecream stall before going to after school activities – and a couple of children before going to their buses. Unless children are with an adult this is not allowed.  I would be grateful for your support by reminding children of this fact and by packing additional healthy snacks for children who are staying at school after 3pm for activities.

The library is in desperate need of parent volunteers to wrap books.  We have many new books and more on the way, but they all need to be wrapped before we can get them in the hands of the students. No experience necessary as we will provide training. Why not bring a friend and make it a book wrapping party?!

Please email the library team at library@kjs.edu.hk if you are able to help out and tell us the days and times that work best for you.  Thank you in advance for your support.

Hand, Foot and Mouth

Hand Foot and Mouth a highly contagious disease which, although usually not serious, is not very nice to experience.  In order to avoid the annual HFM outbreak please be extra vigilant in monitoring your child for symptoms which include a fever with spots or rashes on the hands, feet or (ulcers) in the mouth. Whilst the fever associated with HFM is usually mild, in some cases it can cause body temperature to increase rapidly to high levels. In addition the spots may not show for a day or so after the fever. If you suspect that your child may be infected please seek medical advice and keep them away from school until they have recovered. We are in close contact with the Department of Health Protection (DHP) whose main advice is to ensure hands are kept clean. Please remind your children of the importance of washing their hands regularly during the day.

Student Action

I would like to share with you the action taken by Aaron (5M) and Rachelann (3J) while on holiday in the beautiful island nation of Sri Lanka this summer, showing how they really embodied one of our Guiding Statements Demonstrating our values through responsible action:

My experience of releasing baby turtles

During the summer holidays I went to Sri Lanka with my family for 2 weeks.  One of the things that I did while I was there was I went to a beach town in Sri Lanka called Bentota.  When I went there, me and my family went to the Kosgoda sea turtle hatchery where we learnt lots about different species of sea turtles.

The  species that we learned about were the Olive Ridley Turtle, the Loggerhead turtle, the Green turtle, the Leatherback turtle and the Albino sea turtle.

We saw all of the turtles except for the leatherback turtle.   We could not see the leatherback turtle because it was too heavy to keep in captivity, it was too heavy because it could weigh up to 600 pounds.

We also saw a deformed loggerhead turtle that was still swimming.  The young turtles that we saw were 2 baby Loggerhead turtles and loads of newborn green turtles and ready to release baby green turtles.

We knew that the green turtles were ready to be released because the spot where the umbilical cord of the baby turtle was, had now been closed up with skin and it wasn’t red anymore.

I learned a new interesting, though weird fact about turtles if turtle eggs were laid some place warm like really deep into the sand the turtles would be female and if they were buried someplace cool like close to the surface of the sand they would be male.

Taking action is one of the five essential elements of the Primary Years Programme. It can present in many different ways, both big and small. We are always looking to see if children have taken action as a result of their learning. Please let me know if you have noticed your child taking action so that I can celebrate their achievement in this newsletter.  The graphic below may give you an idea of what we are looking for!
