Yr2 Curriculum Update – 10/11/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our FOURTH edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Two have been up to. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The students in Year 2 have been following the inquiry cycle to investigate questions related to their physical and emotional wellbeing.  During the investigation phase, students were able to develop their research skills by using information books, iPads, photographs and experiments to find answers to the questions- ‘How does sugar affect my well being?’ and ‘How can I manage my anger to help my well being?’  Having gathered information, the students were encouraged to personally reflect by considering how they will take action to improve their wellbeing. Students were encouraged to record their personal reflections in the style of a diary entry.

The students in Year 2 have also continued to develop and use a variety of new vocabulary to describe and explain how they feel. The students have used dictionaries and thesaurus’ to unpack the meaning of a growing bank of emotive language and then write about times they have felt a variety of ways, e.g. frustrated, anxious, delighted etc.

In maths, we have continued to explore the concept of time. This week, the students have been encouraged to sort and sequence familiar events within a typical day using the vocabulary, morning, afternoon, evening and night. The students have also been introduced to timelines and have been encouraged to create their own timelines to show the sequential order of events in a typical day.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The first two photographs demonstrate the students carrying out experiments to find answers to their research questions. Students were encouraged to observe and read the sugar content in a variety of drinks and then weigh out that much sugar to compare which drinks are most healthy for our body and which are not. The students had great fun inquiring into this and this engagement encouraged lots of students to take action in order to make healthier choices. The second experiment demonstrates the students practising different ways to calm down from anger and anxiety.  The other photograph demonstrates the students sorting a variety of pictures related to different times in the day. They were encouraged to work collaboratively to sort the cards and identify their own criteria for sorting.
