Yr2 Curriculum Update – 13/10/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our FOURTH edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Two have been up to. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The students in Year 2 have worked alongside their peers to design and create a system which can be used by their classmates and teachers at  school. The students were asked to identify and discuss the purpose of their system and the parts needed in order for it to function. Once the students had planned their system, they were given opportunities to make the various parts and implement it. The students then worked together to evaluate and reflect upon the success of their system to identify whether it needed to be improved or developed to suit people’s needs. This encouraged the students to think critically and use the skill of analysis in a meaningful context.

Having designed, implemented and evaluated their systems, the students in Year 2 were given the opportunity to write a report. This enabled the students to explore the skill of explanation writing.

In maths, we have continued to explore the number system and how it is constructed to suit people’s needs. We have used a variety of manipulatives, such as bundling sticks, Numicon and Base 10 blocks to create number values. We have organised numbers using number charts to identify how many thousands, hundreds, tens and ones make up a given number.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The photograph above demonstrates the students working together to discuss and identify the need for a system to be put in place in our shared area. They brainstormed possible solutions to help control how many students can learn through play in an area without it being too crowded.

The second photograph demonstrates how the students are able to use Base 10 blocks and Numicon as a counting tool to show the value of a two, three and four digit number.

How you can help at home

Using the password located in your child’s diary, go onto the KJS website www.kjs.edu.hk  and browse our Year 2 Splat page for videos about systems!

Practise Place Value Games, which explore 100’s, 10’s and 1’s here

Design and Make: Look around your home. Think of a need to develop a new system for you and your family members. What’s the purpose of the system? What parts would you need to make? How does it function? Design and Make a system. Test it out. Share your learning during Show and Tell at school.

Thank you!

A big thank you to all parents who have offered to give up their time to become a Parent Helper in Year 2. Both the Y2 students and teachers are excited to work alongside side families in order to support teaching and learning for students over the academic year.
