Yr3 Weekly Update – 01/20/17

Central Idea:

Water is a finite resource that is not shared equally.

Unit of Inquiry

This is our final week of our Sharing the Planet unit.  The children have been using the computer to research and collect information about water crises in different parts of the world. They have continued to use their skills at note taking to record their understanding and are now using this information to complete their infographics using Piktochart. Many children have been inspired by what we have been doing in class and it has been lovely to see such much independent work being presented to the class.  Even after the unit has ended we hope that the children are still aware of their water consumption and continue to find ways to reduce their use to help our environment.

Maths

Maths this week has continued with addition and subtraction.  We are looking at number bonds and how this strategy of making 10 can help us to add up mentally.  We are also continuing to understand how to use the jump strategy to bridge 10, exchanging 10 and using our knowledge of adding in groups of 2, 5 and 10.  Measure, capacity and volume has been a lot of fun this week with children applying their skills at measuring out liquids to create fruit mocktails and magical potions.  This has had a direct link to addition when they are trying to add up their millilitres to reach a goal capacity.

Literacy

Note taking is still our main focus.  We are using our ATLs (attitudes to learning) to guide this. The children are very clear as to what makes good notes; keywords, own words and recording similar ideas together. Reading information is at the centre of this and ensuring that children know how to use dictionaries to search for unfamiliar words. Taking this information and creating a visual to represent the information has been challenging but a great experience.  We are looking forward to seeing the final products.

Please Remember to…

  • layer your children on cold days, particularly on PE days. Children warm up during the day and cannot remove clothing to cool down
  • have healthy snacks
  • check your child’s diary for notes and information from school

Home learning to share with the children

We shall be starting our new Unit of Inquiry next week.  It is history based.  We will be looking at old and new Hong Kong and make comparisons. If you get the opportunity this weekend perhaps you could discuss your life as a child compared to your child’s life today.  Where did you grow up? How was your childhood the same and what is different?  What did you play? What was your school like? What did you do at home to help the family? How did you get to school, shops, parks etc…?
